Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University men's soccer team ended its 2021 regular season with a 4-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to visiting Post University on Thursday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Felician (6-9-1, 5-6 CACC) entered the day locked into seventh place in the CACC standings. Thursday's result, however, lifted Post (9-5-1, 9-2) into a share of the conference regular-season championship with Wilmington (Del.) University. The Eagles defeated Wilmington earlier this season and thus became the No. 1 seed for next week's CACC Championship tournament.
Felician will compete in the CACC playoffs for the first time since 2011. The Golden Falcons will meet No. 14 nationally-ranked Wilmington in Newark, Del., at 1 p.m. during Monday's quarterfinal round. Post will face No. 8 seed Thomas Jefferson University in Waterbury, Conn., on Monday.
The Eagles took an early lead on Thursday after Felician was unable to clear a Post corner kick during the seventh minute. Post controlled possession for much of the first half, and cashed in again after a Felician defender was whistled for a handball inside the 18-yard box. Senior Alvaro Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) converted the penalty kick for the first of his two goals on the day and Post led, 2-0, at the halftime break.
Freshman Anthony Mayorga (Dover, N.J./Dover) got off Felician's only shot on goal early in the second half, but it was easily saved by Post junior goalkeeper David Mollentheil (Danbury, Conn.). From there, the Eagles again pushed the action. The visitors were whistled for 16 offside violations on the day, but kept the Golden Falcons from mounting many dangerous threats offense.
Goals by the Eagles during the 69th and 72nd minutes secured the victory. Post accumulated advantages of 22-3 in shots and 8-1 in corner kicks for the afternoon, and had shots attempted by 13 different players. Felician senior goalkeeper George Hernandez (Paterson, N.J./PCTI) was credited with 10 saves.
Felician's six victories are its most since 2011, when the Golden Falcons were 10-10.
