Men's Soccer Downed By No. 14 Wilmington During CACC Quarterfinals

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – No. 7 seed Felician University was defeated by host and No. 2 seed Wilmington (Del.) University, 6-0, during the quarterfinals of the 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championship tournament on Monday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. Wilmington (16-2-1) entered the day ranked No. 14 in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll.

Senior forward Shawn Genus (St. Elizbeth, Jamaica) scored three goals and freshman forward Shoki Yoshida (Hyogo, Japan) added two for the Wildcats. Felician senior goalkeeper George Hernandez (Paterson, N.J.) made 10 saves.

Wilmington was the national leader in Division II in total goals during the regular season with 61, and the Wildcats were on the attack almost immediately on Monday. The hosts got off four shots during the match's first seven minutes. By the 18-minute mark, Hernandez had already stopped seven shots.

The Wildcats' efforts proved fruitful shortly thereafter. Yoshida scored at the 18:36 mark and Genus followed at 21:31, both finishing on crosses from teammates. Play leveled off slightly after that point and Wilmington led, 2-0 at halftime.

Perhaps Felician's best scoring opportunity came when, following a scramble in front of the Wilmington goal, the ball leaked out to freshman Ernesto Teran (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) just over a minute into period two. Teran blasted a clean shot well over the crossbar.

Wilmington's quick-strike offense was again on display later in the half as the hosts put the game away. Yoshida tallied at 51:47, and Genus converted a penalty kick 41 seconds later. Genus completed the hat trick during the 62nd minute, and the Wildcats tacked on a goal with 5:11 to play for the final margin.

Wilmington, which advances to face Dominican (N.Y.) College in Friday's semifinals in Waterbury, Conn., amassed statistical advantages of 26-4 in shots and 11-2 in corner kicks.

Felician (6-10-1) was participating in its first postseason game since 2011.
