Spirited Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short Of Concordia

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University junior forward Rosie Arias (Linden, N.J./Linden) collected a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds and helped lead a second-half comeback that fell short during the Golden Falcons' 57-47 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball loss to visiting Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. The Clippers earned a sweep of the teams' two-game regular-season series.

Freshman swing player Sarah McSpadden (Melbourne, Australia/Box Hill SSC) scored 13 points with four assists for Felician. McSpadden was 4 of 8 from three-point range.

Concordia (4-3, 4-3 CACC) led, 25-16, at halftime and by as many as 13 points during the third period. But Arias scored the first four points of a 9-0 Felician run that pulled her team to within 32-28, and the hosts exited the quarter down by that same spread, 34-30.

The Clippers opened a nine-point edge with 6:41 remaining when Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) jumped a passing lane and fed teammate Sarah Hopkins (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) for a layup. But Felician was not through. Two Damia Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Joseph) free throws and a longball from McSpadden made it 43-39 at the 5:19 mark.

Concordia, however, pulled away by netting the game's next nine points. Bacaliu capped the spurt with a three-pointer at 3:44 for a 12-point edge, and the hosts never recovered.

Bacaliu collected 19 points, including 14 after halftime, and added four assists and five steals. Senior Shanice Graves (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monroe College) contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.

Felician senior co-captain Destiny Esquilin (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) turned in career highs of nine points and five assists. Four of the five players who started the season opener for the Golden Falcons (0-6, 0-6) nearly three weeks ago were inactive on Saturday due to injury.

Felician is home again on Sunday to take on Nyack College at 4 p.m. No spectators are allowed at CACC events this season; check www.caccnetwork.com for webstream details.
