Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Senior defender Alexandros Avraamides (Nicosia, Cyprus/Paignton Academy [U.K.]) scored with three minutes, 46 seconds, left in the second overtime period to lift Felician University to a come-from-behind 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over visiting Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Avraamides' score was the only lead Felician held in the contest.
The Golden Falcons (2-4, 1-1 CACC), who had trailed since the 35th minute, had tied the game with 11:38 remaining in regulation time on the first collegiate goal by freshman forward Real Nix (Kearny, N.J./Newark Academy). Sophomore Carlos Alonso (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain/Lycee Francais Jules Verne) assisted on the play.
Felician senior goalkeeper George Hernandez (Paterson, N.J./PCTI) earned the victory with seven saves, including one in extra time. Hernandez had kept the Golden Falcons in contention with multiple stops from close range.
Holy Family (2-4-1, 1-1) was the first team on the scoreboard, finding the net in the 22nd minute. The Golden Falcons drew even at the 32:37 mark when sophomore Kevin Chavez (Kearny, N.J,/Kearny) ran onto a long through-ball from classmate Alvaro Martin Castedo (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain/Colegio Salesianas Tenerife) and finished. It was the first NCAA goal for Chavez as well.
Fewer than 2 ½ minutes later, however, a Felician defender took down a Tiger player inside the 18-yard box. Dakota Taylor (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) converted the ensuing penalty. Taylor finished with a goal and an assist and Mohamden Elgayar (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) also scored for Holy Family.
The winning sequence began with a Felician throw-in in its offensive third. Chavez served a ball from the right side along the goal line that caromed off a Tiger defender and was blindly punched to the left side by the goalkeeper. Avraamides stepped to the ball and struck it to the right of the keeper to end the contest.
The hosts survived statistical disadvantages of 17-9 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.
Felician is back in Lyndhurst on Oct. 2 to take on Georgian Court University in CACC action at 8 p.m.
