Box Score WATERBURY, Conn. – Felician University closed with an 18-6 run over the final 4 ½ minutes to earn an 80-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over host Post University on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center. Felician junior guard Catherine Lecop (Madrid, Spain) scored eight points during the final decisive spurt.
The Golden Falcons handed Post (9-3, 3-1 CACC) its first CACC loss of the season. The Eagles are ranked No. 10 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region media poll. Due to the annual NCAA Division II "dark" period, followed by four postponements due to health and safety protocols stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, the Golden Falcons (5-8, 3-1) were playing for just the second time in a month.
Felician redshirt sophomore swing player Briana Lee (Jersey City, N.J.) totaled 14 points and 20 rebounds. Lee, who helped her team to a 48-35 edge on the boards, now owns four of the seven individual 20+ rebound games in the 26-year history of the Golden Falcon program. She was also 10 for 10 at the foul line on the night. Lecop (5-6 FG, 4-5 3FG) netted 14 points as well.
Felician trailed, 43-40, at halftime and 56-51 after three periods. A Makayla Thompson (Springfield, Mass.) layup with eight minutes, five seconds left in regulation time allowed Post to match its largest lead of the night, 61-53. But by the 5:00 mark, the visitors had drawn even, 62-62 following two Lee free throws.
Thompson drained a three-point field goal on the Eagles' next possession. But Lecop answered with a successful jump shot, and, after a Felician defensive stop, the Golden Falcons went ahead for good, 67-65, on a three-pointer by senior Niaimani Marshall (Jersey City, N.J.). With her team ahead, 68-67, Lecop drained a three with 2:59 remaining, and another Lecop long-range jumper at the 1:04 mark made the score 76-71. Lee followed with a steal and two more foul shots to secure the victory.
Graduate guard Katelyn Andres (North Bergen, N.J.) recorded 13 points, four rebounds and three assists and freshman guard Courtney Logan (Riverview, Fla.) added 12 points and three steals for Felician. The Eagles' Thompson ended up with 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Felician, which stopped a four-game losing streak, surpassed its win total for the entire 2019-20 season. The Golden Falcons survived committing 30 turnovers, in part by shooting a season-high 47 percent from the floor. The visitors were 8 of 15 from behind the three-point arc.
Felician hosts Georgian Court University in CACC action on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J. The game is a makeup from a January 15 postponement.
