Long-Awaited Win At Caldwell Places Women's Basketball On Cusp Of Playoffs

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Sophomore Briana Lee (Jersey City, N.J.) converted a tiebreaking layup with one minute, 10 seconds, remaining in regulation time and classmate Uzor Uchidiuno (Toronto, Canada) followed with a second-chance basket as Felician University topped host Caldwell University, 65-62, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening on the George R. Newman Center's Mark A. Corino Court.

Felician (10-13, 8-6 CACC) snapped a 14-game losing streak to Caldwell, besting the Cougars for the first time since Feb. 6, 2014. It marked the Golden Falcons' first victory over Caldwell in the Newman Center, which opened in 2002. Felician's previous road win against the Cougars came during the 2000 CACC Tournament.

The sides entered the night tied for third place in the CACC North Division. Felician remained a half-game behind first-place Dominican (N.Y.) College and moved percentage points behind second-place Post University with three games remaining. The top two teams in the division at season's end will host a conference quarterfinal matchup on March 1. The Golden Falcons would secure a spot in the CACC playoffs should they defeat fifth-place Nyack College on Saturday.

Lee tallied 20 points and added nine rebounds. Golden Falcon graduate guard Katelyn Andres (North Bergen, N.J.) also scored 20 points. Junior guard Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Caldwell with 22 points.

O'Shaughnessy amassed 20 first-half points as the hosts built a 24-16 lead after one quarter and moved ahead by as many as 14 points midway through the second period.  Felician closed the second with a 10-2 spurt, including a three-point field goal by Andres in the waning seconds, to trail, 36-30, at halftime.

The visitors completed the comeback during quarter No. 3, flipping a nine-point deficit at the 4:57 mark into a 51-51 tie by the final buzzer. Felician took its biggest lead of the night, 60-55, on a Niaimani Marshall (Jersey City, N.J.) jump shot with 5:00 to play, but the Cougars drew even on a steal and layup by Saundra Cleckley (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) at 2:23.

Following a non-shooting Cougar foul, Marshall found Lee open under the basket with an in-bounds pass for the go-head bucket. Uchiciuno scored following a Caldwell turnover, and when Rebecca Morrison (Ayshire Scotland) answered only 0:11 remained with Felician ahead by two. The hosts were forced to foul, and Lee split a pair at the line, leaving Caldwell within one possession. But a long tying three-point attempt by the Cougars was off the mark.

Uchidiuno recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to help Felician to a 46-34 edge on the boards. Marshall totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Felician plays its final three regular-season games at home, beginning with a 1 p.m. meeting with Nyack on Saturday in Rutherford.
