Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A putback layup at the regulation buzzer by redshirt sophomore center Aisha Traore (Bronx, N.Y./Adlai Stevenson) lifted Felician University to a 68-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Caldwell University on Monday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician has defeated Caldwell twice in the same season for the first time ever.
The victory put Felician (12-13, 10-6 CACC) in a position to claim at least a share of the CACC North Division regular-season championship should it defeat Post University in its regular-season finale on Saturday evening. The Golden Falcons also earned the right to host a quarterfinal conference playoff game on March 1.
On Monday, Felician trailed by as many as 21 points during the second period and 41-24 at halftime. With 1:33 to play, the hosts still trailed by 11. Consecutive layups by Briana Lee (Jersey City, N.J./Irvington) followed by a three-point field goal from Courtney Logan (Riverview, Fla./East Bay) cut the deficit to 65-61 at the 1:06 mark. The Golden Falcons elected to begin putting Caldwell on the foul line, and the Cougars went 2 for 8 at the during the final minute.
With possession and the shot clock off, Logan was fouled with her team trailing 67-65, but made only the first free-throw attempt. Caldwell missed a pair of foul shots with just over eight seconds to play, and without a timeout, Felician rushed the ball upcout. A rushed attempt by Logan from inside the lane sailed over the rim, but right into the hands of Traore on the right low post. The final buzzer sounded as Traore's layup passed through the net.
Lee finished with a career-high 29 points, 11 rebounds and four steals and Logan netted 16 points for Felician. Senior Niaimani Marshall (Jersey City, N.J./Suffield Academy [Conn.]) amassed nine points, six rebounds, and seven assists and Traore finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Golden Falcons held Caldwell without a field goal over the final 4:35. Junior forward Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland/Charnwood College) led the visitors with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Felician faces Post at 5:30 p.m on Saturday. The Golden Falcons will celebrate Senior Night, and honor seniors Destiny Esquilin (Vineland, N.J./Vineland), Damia Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Joseph's) and Marshall in a pregame ceremony.
