Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The New York Institute of Technology men's basketball team converted 9 out of 10 free-throw attempts in the final 64 seconds to secure its 92-87 non-conference victory over visiting Felician College on Wednesday evening at Recreation Hall. Felician senior Antoine Obery (Roselle, N.J.) produced game highs of 23 points and nine rebounds in defeat.
Sparked by a three-point field goal and a lay-in from junior center Ayotunde Oyeniyi (Lagos, Nigeria), the Golden Falcons (4-6) scored seven consecutive points to tie the game at 77-77 with three minutes, 37 seconds remaining in regulation. But NYIT's Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) made three of four at the foul line in consecutive possessions to put the hosts back ahead. After an empty trip by Felician, Bear junior Phil Izevbehai (Huntington, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer out of a time-out, making the score 83-77 at the 1:42 mark and putting Felician in catch-up mode.
The Bears fouled a Golden Falcon shooter during a three-point attempt on consecutive possessions in the final minute, but offset those mistakes with its own foul shooting prowess. Felician came within three points on two occasions in the closing seconds, but never had the ball with a chance to tie.
Obery shot 10 for 15 from the floor. Teammate Tajric Boggs (Coram, N.Y.) posted a season-high 18 points to go along with five assists and four steals, and Anthony D. Green (Jersey City, N.J.) added 15 points for Felician. Oyeniyi had a perfect shooting day (5-5 FG, 2-2 3FG, 2-2 FT) and registered a career-high 14 points and five rebounds.
Roberts finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes to pace the Bears (6-3). Izevbehai had 22 points and five assists.
The first half contained five ties and 12 lead changes. A buzzer-beating putback by Obery allowed Felician to enter intermission trailing only 45-44. NYIT opened up a 61-51 edge with five minutes gone by in the second half, but the Golden Falcons quickly closed the gap, and briefly took a one-point lead with 9:48 to play after consecutive trifectas by Anthony Obery (Roselle, N.J.) and Green.
Felician failed to capitalize on a 40-28 rebounding advantage that created a 22-9 edge in second-chance points.
The Golden Falcons were defeated despite posting a season-high offensive output. They have allowed 90 or more points in consecutive games for the first time since February 2010.
