First-Place Dominican Men Get Past Golden Falcons, 88-77

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – An 18-8 run to close the first half gave Dominican (N.Y.) College the lead it would never relinquish in its 88-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Felician College on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Dominican (19-4, 13-2 CACC) is in first place in the CACC North Division and received votes in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll.

Senior guard Anthony D. Green (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) scored a career-high 27 points in defeat for Felician (9-14, 6-9). The Chargers were paced by 28 points in 25 minutes from senior forward Daniel Woods (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist), who made 12 of 17 field-goal attempts and added seven rebounds.

With the loss, combined with Concordia (N.Y.) College's win at Caldwell College on Tuesday, Felician falls one game behind Concordia in the race for fourth place and the final playoff berth from the CACC North. Both schools have three games remaining, including a date with each other on Feb. 19 in Bronxville, N.Y.

Tuesday's first half featured six ties and nine lead changes before a three-point field goal from junior Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) gave the Chargers the lead for good, 29-27, with 6:39 left in the opening stanza. Helped by three lay-ups in transition, Dominican quickly moved ahead by 11 before a Green jumper made it 44-35 in favor of the visitors at halftime. Woods scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the period.

Felician scored the first seven points of the second half to pull within 44-42 with 16:19 to play. Ginyard answered with a three, and for the next 11 minutes of game action, the Charger advantage hovered between three and eight points. Dominican then gained further separation with five consecutive tallies, the last three by Nick Smith (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), to move ahead, 69-59, at the 5:22 mark. The Golden Falcons never got back within two possessions of their guests the rest of the night.

The Golden Falcon comeback efforts were hampered by a 12-for-23 (52 percent) performance at the foul line, including 3 for 11 (27 percent) in the second half.

Felician senior swingman Antoine Obery (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) turned in his 11th double-double of the season with 19 points (6-6 FG, 7-10 FT) and 11 rebounds. Sophomore J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J./Linden) (5-8 FG, 3-5 3FG) netted 13 points, and freshman point guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) produced five points, five rebounds, and season highs of seven assists and three steals for the Golden Falcons.

Ginyard was 8-for-11 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from distance, and finished with 22 points. Backcourt-mate Leon Porter (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) earned all 14 of his points in the second period.
