Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Felician College junior guard Lamine Cooper (Willingboro, N.J.) posted his first collegiate double-double with career highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds, but the Golden Falcons lost to host Mercy College, 70-63, in non-conference men's basketball action on Thursday night at Mercy Gymnasium.
Mercy (4-4) held Felician to one field goal in the game's final four minutes. The Mavericks received 23 points, six rebounds and five steals from junior swingman Tyseem Lyles (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Felician (0-10) led by as many as nine points with 11 minutes, 49 seconds, remaining in the second half. The Mavericks drained three-point field goals on three of their next four possessions to tie the game at 50-50 at the 8:54 mark. Each team then scored only two points in the next 3 ½ minutes of game time.
The Golden Falcons went back on top by five points with 4:12 to play on a three from freshman Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y.). But the hosts clamped down on defense, and put together an 11-0 run that brought the game clock down to 0:41. Jeremiah Brown (Queens Bridge, N.Y.) made a pair of three throws on consecutive possessions which gave Mercy the lead for good, and Joshua Thompson (Chester, Pa.) followed with consecutive second-chance lay-ups.
Felician senior J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J.) scored the game's next four points to pull his team to within 65-63 at 0:28. But with the Golden Falcons in possession trailing by three shortly thereafter, the Mavericks' Terrance Murchie (Franklin Square, N.Y.) came up with a steal. Mercy went 4 for 6 at the foul line down the stretch and held Felician off the scoreboard to secure the win.
Brown scored 17 points for Mercy, and Murchie came up with 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench. Pringley's 17 points topped Felician, while Kozul canned five three-pointers for the second time in three games and finished with 16 points.
Felician held the Mavericks to 35-percent shooting, but committed 26 turnovers, which Mercy converted into 26 points.
Mercy led, 17-16, midway through the opening period before the Golden Falcons flipped the script with a 13-2 run for a seven-point lead. Felician took a 36-32 edge into halftime.
Felician begins a four-game homestand on Sunday, when it entertains St. Thomas Aquinas College at 2 p.m. in both teams' final match-up before the NCAA-mandated seven-day dead period.
