Men's Basketball Comes Up Empty Late In 59-55 Setback

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Philadelphia University came up with a series of late defensive stops to key its 59-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Felician College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Philadelphia junior guard Derek Johnson (Consohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) scored 24 points, including a tie-breaking jump shot with one minute, 55 seconds, remaining in regulation time. Freshman Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came off the bench to make 5 out of 6 three-point field goal attempts and top Felician (0-8, 0-4 CACC) with 15 points.

A three-pointer by sophomore guard Tim Massado (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) gave the Golden Falcons a 52-51 edge with 3:02 to play. The Rams' Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) made 1 of 2 shots at the foul line at 2:39, and the visitors followed by forcing an errant three-point attempt as the shot clock wound down. Gibbs assisted on Johnson's jumper that put Philadelphia (4-4, 2-1) ahead for good, and a missed Felician jump shot on the opposite end of the floor went out of bounds back to the Rams.

As the game clock ticked under one minute, Johnson took the ball strong to the basket, was fouled, and split a pair of free throws. The Rams grabbed the offensive carom on the second-shot miss, but Felician rebounded a missed jump shot to keep the score within one possession. However, a bad perimeter pass went out of bounds back to Philadelphia, and Gibbs made 4 of 4 at the line to secure the victory. The Golden Falcons were held scoreless for the game's final three minutes until an inconsequential three by Lamine Cooper (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech) at the final buzzer.

6-foot-11 junior Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Rams, while senior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) added 12 points and six assists. Kozul added two assists and two blocks to his season-high point total in 25 minutes of action.

Felician received 10 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic). Cooper finished with nine points and six boards. The Golden Falcons were outscored, 15-0, at the foul line..

Consecutive Kozul trifectas gave Felician a 21-12 edge with 6:18 left in the first half. Philadelphia, however, came all the way back, and went into the locker room with a 30-27 advantage on Johnson's three-pointer at 0:08. Back-to-back Johnson buckets supplied the Rams their largest bulge, 41-31, with 12:52 remaining, but the Golden Falcons countered with a 14-3 spurt over the next 5 ½ minutes for a short-lived one-point lead.
