Men's Basketball Drops Fast-Paced Affair To Deacons, 95-83

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Bloomfield College shot 64 percent from the field, including 18 for 23 in the second half, in its 95-83 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Felician College on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Bloomfield (15-7, 13-2 CACC) is the three-time defending conference champion and is in first place in the CACC North Division.

The Deacons received a game-high 28 points from sophomore forward Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Graphic Communication Arts). Blue, who figured prominently as Bloomfield went ahead to stay early in the second half, shot 11 for 16 from the floor and 4 of 4 at the foul line, and added seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 39 minutes of action.

Both teams got off to hot starts offensively, and kept up a blistering shooting pace for most of the opening period. Both teams led by as many as seven points in the half, with a Blue buzzer-beating dunk forcing Felician (5-17, 3-12) to settle for a 49-45 halftime advantage. The Deacons shot 55 percent and the Golden Falcons 54 percent in the first 20 minutes of play.

Felician clung to that same four-point edge with 15:42 remaining in regulation when the Deacons tallied the next eight points, six coming from Blue. A Will Thompson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) lay-in cut the Golden Falcon deficit to 61-59, but a Blue three-pointer at the 8:42 mark capped a 19-6 Bloomfield uprising that gave the visitors a nine-point bulge.

The Golden Falcons stayed within range, but could not come up with key defensive stops. The first two times Felician came back to a five-point deficit, Bloomfield sophomore Clarence White (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael) answered by draining jump shots.

Finally, buckets by J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J./Linden) and Anthony Obery (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) made it 79-76 with 3:03 to play. But Blue took the ball the length of the court for a transition lay-up, and, helped by blocked shots on consecutive possessions by center Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J./St. Peter's Seminary), Bloomfield scored eight straight points to put away its fourth consecutive victory.

Pringley led the Golden Falcons with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) scored 12 points with four assists, and Thompson finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Bloomfield junior guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J./Marist) scored 19 points, and White (7-8 FG, 4-4 FT) netted 18 off the Deacon bench. Udo posted eight rebounds and five blocks to go along with five points.

Felician was limited to five free-throw attempts for the night, and was outscored, 14-3, at the foul line. Bloomfield's hot shooting allowed it to offset 23 turnovers.

Prior to the game, Felician president Dr. Anne M. Prisco honored the inaugural class of the College's Athletics Hall of Fame – administrator/coach Bob Symons and coach/contributor Dr. Russ Wiebe – in a brief ceremony.

With the loss, the Golden Falcons were eliminated from the CACC playoff race.
