Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) scored 18 points and senior center Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic) made two late tie-breaking free-throws as Felician University earned a 57-54 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting Bloomsburg University on Saturday evening at Job Gymnasium. Felician was playing its 2015-16 season opener.
The victory was the first in the collegiate coaching career of Felician head coach Ivan Lewis.
A game which featured 11 ties and 14 lead changes was even for the final time at 51-51 following two foul shots by Husky sophomore Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) with four minutes, 12 seconds, left in regulation time. Miavivululu was fouled on Felician's next possession and sank both free throws to give the hosts the lead for good.
Reid's driving lay-up put the Golden Falcons ahead, 55-51, at the 2:38 mark. After an empty possession by both sides, Bloomsburg pulled to within a one-point deficit on a three-point field goal by sophomore Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) with 1:19 to play. But the Huskies did not score again. Mortellite missed the front end of a one-and-one situation at the 0:56 mark, then following a Felician offensive foul, the Golden Falcons got two defensive stops down the stretch, making 2 of 4 at the foul line in between.
Mortellite and Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy) scored 12 points each to top the Huskies.
The first half was tied eight times before Felician went into the intermission ahead, 26-25. The teams were within three points of each other for the first nine minutes of period two before a pair of Tim Massado (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) three-pointers sandwiched a dunk by Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech) to help give the Golden Falcons their largest advantage of the night, 45-37. But Bloomsburg came all the way back to take a 49-47 lead at the 5:50 mark, setting up the tight finish.
Miavivululu finished with 12 points and eight rebounds and Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came off the bench to register 10 points and six rebounds for Felician.
