Reid Scores 24 But Men's Basketball Loses To Franklin Pierce

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Felician University junior guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J.) matched a career high with 24 points, but the Golden Falcons were defeated by Franklin Pierce University, 81-63, in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon on the Hennessy Center's Coach Baxter Court. The game tipped off play in the 10th Annual James Clancy Memorial Tournament, a two-day, four-team event hosted by Dominican (N.Y.) College.

Felician (4-7) ended a competitive layoff of 13 days. Franklin Pierce was playing for the first time after 12 days off.

Reid made 10 of 13 field-goal attempts and shot 4-for-5 at the foul line. He added three rebounds, three assists (against one turnover) and three steals in 36 minutes of action.

Reid tallied 18 second-half points, exactly half of Felician's total for the period. But he could not help the Golden Falcons overcome a 37-27 halftime deficit. Five consecutive points by Reid in the early stages of period two brought Felician to within a 40-34 deficit with 17 minutes, 41 seconds to play in regulation time. But Franklin Pierce (6-5) scored the next seven points, including five by Matt Banton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as part of a 12-2 run to restore a 16-point edge at the 13:40 mark.

The Golden Falcons scored on their next two possessions for a 52-40 deficit with 12:30 remaining, but never came any closer. The Ravens extended to an 18-point bulge on a Lolami Charles (Edgewood, Md.) bucket at 9:36, and owned their largest advantage, 77-56, on a Charles free throw with 1:32 to play.

Banton led four FPU double-figure scorers with 20 points in 21 minutes off the bench. He canned four of the Ravens' nine three-point field goals. Raven senior guard Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.) totaled 13 points and eight rebounds, and junior teammate Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) recorded 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. FPU owned a 43-28 rebounding advantage, including 14-6 on the offensive glass. Charles finished with 12 points.

For Felician, senior center Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J.) scored 11 points with seven rebounds and junior forward Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J.) turned in 10 points and seven boards.

Franklin Pierce, which never trailed, got out to an 11-5 lead after 7 ½ minutes of game action, and was ahead by as many as 12 points in the first half.

Felician concludes play in the event on Sunday when it faces Daemen College at 2 p.m. in Orangeburg.
