Mwila Scores 22 As Men's Basketball Holds Off Chestnut Hill

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior guard C.J. Mwila (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson) scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second half and senior center Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic) made the go-ahead free throws with 27 seconds remaining to lift Felician University to a 65-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Mwila shot 8 for 14 from the field, including 5 of 8 from three-point range. In playing the entire 40 minutes, he also recorded seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sophomore Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) scored 19 points and Miavivululu finished with 13 and three blocked shots for Felician (7-13, 4-9 CACC).

A Miavivululu jumper gave the Golden Falcons a 60-53 edge with three minutes, 50 seconds, remaining in regulation time. But Chestnut Hill (8-12, 5-7) received consecutive three-point field goals by Dakpe Yiljep (Samaru-Zaria, Nigeria/Westtown School) and Liban Awl (Manassas, Va./Patriot) before a putback by freshman Antonio Toplyn Jr. (Sickerville, N.J./Campbell University) handed the Griffins a one-point lead with 1:01 to play.

In a frantic sequence on Felician's next possession, Mwila missed on a driving-layup, and CHC sophomore Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) came up with the off-balance rebound. Isaac lost his footing and the ball, and Felician's Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) scooped it up and drove to the basket, also unsuccessfully. But Miavivululu grabbed the offensive board and was fouled, canning both free throws to put the hosts back on top.

As the game clock wound under 10 seconds, Isaac missed on a scoop lay-up, and Kozul rebounded, was fouled, and made both shots. Chestnut Hill dribbled the ball over half-court and called timeout with fewer than seven ticks to play. Up by three, Felician elected to foul on purpose, and Isaac made only the second. Kozul made 1 of 2 at the 0:02.4 mark to keep the visitors alive, but the Griffins could only manage a desperation heave as time expired.

The Golden Falcons held CHC to 40-percent shooting from the floor, including 33-percent in the second half. Felician offset an 18-6 scoring disadvantage at the foul line by shooting 11 for 23 (48 percent) from three-point range.

Isaac had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists and Awl finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Griffins.

Felician led by as many as eight points in the first half before settling for a 38-35 halftime lead. The Golden Falcons' largest bulge came at 52-41 with 10:57 remaining.
