Men's Basketball Nipped In Overtime By Adelphi In Opener

Box Score

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Felician University erased a 14-point second-half deficit to force overtime, but was sunk by an Adelphi University three-point field goal late in the extra session in a 77-76 non-conference men's basketball loss to the Panthers on Friday evening at the Goldstein Fitness Center.

The game began play in the four-team, two-day Pace University Northeast-10/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge, and was the 2016-17 season opener for both Felician and Adelphi.

The Golden Falcons and Panthers were within one possession of each other for the final six minutes of regulation time. Adelphi looked to be moving on to victory when junior Manny Suarez (Cliffside Park, N.J.) laid the ball in with just under two ticks remaining in the second period. However, out of a Felician timeout, Suarez committed a foul, and Felician senior Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J.) converted both free throws to extend the game tied at 68-68.

The Golden Falcons tallied the first four points of overtime, and led for most of the period until a Michael Coffey (Monroe, N.Y.) lay-in knotted the game at 74-74 with 0:54 to play. Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J.) put Felician back ahead at 0:41, but Adelphi's Jack Laffey (Red Bank, N.J.) nailed a corner three at 0:22 for what proved to be the final margin. With the shot clock off, Felician ran the game clock down to two seconds, called timeout, then misfired at the buzzer.

Suarez totaled 27 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Coffey (10-14 FG, 7-10 3FG) also scored 27 for the Panthers. Junior Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) topped Felician with 25 points, and Golden Falcon sophomore Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.) scored 14 points with 12 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Felician fell behind, 22-11, after eight minutes of play, and trailed by the same margin, 37-26, at halftime. A Laffey three-pointer gave Adelphi its largest edge, 43-29, with 17:15 left in the second half, but a three-point play by Webb capped a 17-2 Golden Falcon run which erased the deficit and put Felician up, 46-45, at the 12:59 mark.

Webb finished with 14 points and six assists in 31 minutes off the Felician bench.

The Golden Falcons continue in the event on Saturday when they take on host Pace at 6 p.m.
