Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite receiving 28 points from sophomore forward Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.), Felician University was defeated by host Pace University, 85-76, in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday evening at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The game concluded play in the four-team, two-day Pace Northeast-10 Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge.
Spaulding, a transfer from Bergen Community College, went 8 for 13 from the field, including 4 of 6 on three-point attempts, and made all eight of his free throws. He added five rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes of action.
A game that featured eight ties and 13 lead changed turned during a six-plus minute stretch mid-way through the second half. Felician junior Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) scored to put his team ahead, 59-56, with 12 minutes, 44 seconds, to play in regulation time. But Mike Demello (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) answered with a tying three-point field goal on Pace's next possession.
The shot touched off a 16-2 run for the Setters to provide the lead they would never relinquish. A lay-up by Victor Jusino (Morris Plains, N.J.) put Pace ahead by 11 with 6:33 remaining. Felician went 0 for 8 from the field plus two turnovers during the decisive stretch, scoring only on a pair of Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) foul shots.
The Golden Falcons pulled to within a seven-point deficit on two occasions, but Pace took its largest lead of the night, 79-67, following two Demello free throws at the 1:17 mark. The Setters secured the victory by going 11 for 12 at the line in the final 2:19, including 6 for 6 in the last 36 seconds.
Jusino was 10 for 11 from the field and scored 24 points in 27 minutes before fouling out and topping four Setters in double figures in scoring. Pace sophomore Ryan Peterson (Wethersfield, Conn.) totaled 20 points and seven rebounds.
Senior Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J.) amassed 15 points, five rebounds and five assists off the Felician bench. Stanford scored 14 points for the Golden Falcons.
The lead changed hands 10 times in the first half. Felician was ahead, 23-14, with 8:32 left in the period, only to see the Setters tally the next eight points. The Golden Falcons carried a 41-38 edge into the locker room on the strength of Webb's buzzer-beating three.
Felician takes on Caldwell University in its home and CACC lid-lifter on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
