Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University men's basketball team canned 13 three-point field goals in its 86-72 non-conference victory over visiting Mansfield University on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Mansfield was playing its 2017-18 season opener, while Felician was beginning its home schedule for the campaign.
The Mountaineers and Golden Falcons were meeting for the first time.
Felician (1-2) posted 23 assists on its 31 field goals. Junior guard Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) led four double-figure scorers for the Golden Falcons with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while adding five assists. Senior guard Malik Carter (Philadelphia, Pa./Potter's House Christian) totaled 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for Mansfield.
The Mountaineers entered halftime trailing, 42-39, but used lay-ups by Gerasimos Koutoufas (Glyfada-Athens, Greece/Suffield [Conn.] Academy) and Matt Tamanosky (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) in the first 61 seconds of period two to move ahead. The score was tied, 48-48, when Spaulding nailed a three-pointer with 16 minutes, 58 seconds, remaining to give the Golden Falcons the lead for good.
Felician led by four, 61-57, following a steal and lay-up by Carter at the 10:08 mark. The hosts then took control by running off the game's next 11 points. Junior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE) highlighted the spurt by skying for a vicious putback dunk and running the floor for a transition lay-up on consecutive possessions.
The Mountaineers closed to within a 12-point deficit on a three by Jahmir Green (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys' Latin) with 4:35 showing, but Felician senior Jamar Redmond (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) scored the game's next five points. The Golden Falcons led by as many as 19 on two occasions down the stretch.
Felician received 38 bench points. Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del./Howard) totaled 14 points in 24 minutes and fellow senior Jordan Compas (Yonkers, N.Y./St. Anthony-Jersey City) scored 11 points with nine rebounds in 27 minutes in reserve roles.
Sophomore guard Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University) picked up 11 points and six assists for Felician. Mansfield's Tamanosky shot 8 for 10 from the floor and finished with 22 points.
The Golden Falcons recovered from an early 10-4 deficit to lead by as much as 33-23 with just under seven minutes left in the opening period. Mansfield totaled eight of the half's final 10 points in the last 2:50 to trail by only three at the break.
Felician remains in Rutherford to host Pace University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
