Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University senior forward Jordan Compas (Yonkers, N.Y./St. Anthony-Jersey City) took a charging foul with 7.9 seconds remaining in regulation time to help preserve his team's 77-75 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting Pace University on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
Felician (2-2) earned its first victory over the Setters in five all-time meetings. The Golden Falcons made 14 of their 21 three-point field goal attempts (66.7 percent), including 7 of 8 in the second half.
Senior guard Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del./Howard) came off the bench to top the Golden Falcons with 22 points in 25 minutes. Stanford canned a career-high six three-pointers in 10 attempts. His final one, a rise-and-fire look with a hand in his face, gave Felician the lead for good, 76-75, with 1:09 remaining.
Both teams misfired on their next possession, giving the ball back to Pace with about 25 ticks on the game clock and the shot clock off. Setter freshman Kevin Smith (New Haven, Conn./South Kent) missed on a corner three-pointer, but the ball went out of bounds off of a Felician player. Out of a timeout, Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) drove into the lane, but Compas stood his ground well in front of the restricted area and absorbed Gilbertson's contact.
At the 7.5-second mark, Felician's Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) split a pair of free throws. Pace rushed the ball past midcourt and called timeout at 0:04.9. Freshman Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) received the in-bounds pass but dribbled into a triple-team, putting up a well-contested 17-footer from straight on that bounded off of the front-rim as the final buzzer sounded.
Felician trailed, 44-37, at halftime, and by as many as 11 points early in the second period. But in just four minutes, six seconds of game time, the Golden Falcons reeled off a 20-0 run to take their largest lead of the night, 66-57, at the 9:33 mark. The hosts connected on five three-pointers in the spurt, three by Stanford and two from sophomore Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University).
The Setters answered with the game's next 11 points. For the final 6:50, the teams were never separated by more than one possession.
Wright (6-11 FG, 4-4 3FG) netted a career-high 21 points. Felician received nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots from junior forward Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE).
Sophomore forward Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) scored 22 points with eight rebounds off the bench to top Pace. Smith finished with 15 points and Jacobs added 14.
Felician plays a Thanksgiving Eve contest at Queens (N.Y.) College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The start time has been adjusted from an originally-scheduled 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
