Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Adelphi University men's basketball team sank 18 three-point field goals in its 99-90 non-conference victory over host Felician University on Monday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (4-6) was playing its final non-league contest of the 2017-18 season.
Junior forward Jack Laffey (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) paced four double-figure scorers for Adelphi with 23 points and added six rebounds. While playing all 40 minutes, Laffey was 6 for 14 from behind the three-point arc, leading the Panthers to a 45-percent figure from long range.
Felician junior swingman Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) led all players with 27 points and nine rebounds to take over the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) scoring lead at 20.1 points per game. Spaulding was 11 for 11 from the foul line, helping the Golden Falcons amass a 29-of-33 figure at the stripe in defeat (88 percent).
The lead changed hands on 14 occasions, seven in each period. Adelphi (4-7) moved ahead to stay when junior Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) snapped a 70-70 tie with a conventional three-point play with 13 minutes, two seconds, remaining in regulation time.
Ginyard's lay-up and foul shot began a 21-6 run for the visitors that took up five minutes of game time and led to the Panthers' largest lead of the night, 91-76, at the 8:11 mark. Adelphi canned four three-pointers in the decisive spurt, including three by Ginyard, who totaled 12 of the 21 points.
Felician made a late charge, pulling to within six on two occasions, the second time following a Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del./Howard) jumper at 3:06. The Golden Falcons had two possessions trailing, 96-90, but could not get a shot to fall either time. A three by Panther sophomore Austin Beech (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) at 0:56 sealed the victory and provided the final margin.
Felician sophomore Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) netted 22 points and Stanford finished with 21. Ginyard scored 19 points in 16 minutes off the Adelphi bench, including 14 in the second half. The Panthers received 17 points (7-10 FG) and nine rebounds from junior forward Nick Cambio (Tewksbury, Mass./Cushing Academy).
The Golden Falcons trailed by as many as seven points on three occasions in the first half, but managed to enter intermission with a 48-46 lead on a three-pointer by Wright with 0:02 on the clock.
With final exams and the NCAA dead period looming, Felician faces a competitive layoff of 20 days. The Golden Falcons return to CACC action with a New Year's Eve matinee at Bloomfield College at 2 p.m.
