Men's Basketball Pulls Away From HFU For 82-72 Win

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Felician University ended with a 14-4 run over the final four minutes, five seconds, to earn an 82-72 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium. Felician earned its third victory over Holy Family in the last four seasons.

Junior swingman Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.), the CACC's top scorer, led a balanced Felician offense with 19 points and nine rebounds. Spaulding was 3 for 6 from three-point range, becoming the 10th player in Golden Falcon history to make 100 career three-point field goals. He reached the milestone in 38 games and 221 attempts.

Tiger sophomore swingman Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J.) scored a game-high 21 points and added eight rebounds. Holy Family (2-13, 1-7 CACC) received 14 points and five assists off the bench from sophomore Trai Greer (Cape May Court House, N.J.).

Saturday's contest featured eight ties and 14 lead changes. A pair of free throws by Golden Falcon senior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put his team ahead, 68-61, with 5:57 left in regulation time. But the hosts netted the next seven points, with a jumper by Sanders evening the score at the 4:35 mark.

Williams let Felician move ahead for good with a successful jumper, and HFU's Jamai Womack (Chichester, Pa.) split a pair of free throws on the other end for a 70-69 Golden Falcon advantage. But the hosts then went cold, and when point guard Mansfield Warren Jr. (South Amboy, N.J.) found Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) and Spaulding for threes on consecutive possessions, Felician built their advantage to 78-69 with just 1:25 to play. The Tigers never drew any closer.

Stanford scored 18 points with four assists and sophomore Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) (6-8 FG, 4-4 3FG) totaled 17 points for the Golden Falcons (7-8, 4-3). Williams turned in his team-high fifth "double-double" of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Warren, a true freshman, dished out a season-best nine assists.

Both teams owned seven-point first half leads before Holy Family entered the locker rooms ahead, 40-37. Felician scored the first seven points of period two, and led by as many as seven points on three occasions before Sanders tied the score for the final time.

The Golden Falcons shot 51.8 percent from the floor from the day, including a healthy 55.2 percent rate in the second half, and made 12 of 23 three-point attempts.

In its final game before the beginning of traditional spring semester classes, Felician travels to Nyack College on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
