Concordia Shot In Closing Seconds Defeats Men's Basketball, 72-70

Box Score

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Felician University men's basketball team was outscored, 9-2, in the final 3 ½ minutes of its 72-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to host Concordia (N.Y.) College on Tuesday night at the Meyer Athletic Center.

A successful, tiebreaking floating jump shot in the lane by sophomore Brandon Fields (Washington, D.C.) with 3.3 seconds left in regulation capped the Concordia comeback. The victory allowed the Clippers (9-16, 3-13 CACC) to gain a split of their two-game regular-season series with Felician.

Despite the loss, the Golden Falcons (10-13, 7-8) maintained a lead of 1 ½ games over Post University and two games over Nyack College for the fourth and final playoff spot from the CACC North Division. Post and Nyack also lost conference games on Tuesday. Felician has four games remaining, the most of the trio.

Felician junior swingman Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.) led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Spaulding shot 8 for 12 from the field, including 5 of 9 from three-point range.  Junior Cedrick McFadden (Washington, D.C.) paced a balanced Concordia offense with 14 points and four assists.

A Spaulding three-pointer put the visitors on top, 68-63, with 3:37 remaining in the second half. McFadden cut the Clipper deficit to three with a jumper. On the ensuing Felician possession, Spaulding was whistled for charging and fouled out of the game at the 2:42 mark.

Fields misfired on a tying attempt from distance, but on the other end, Baron Goodridge (Bronx, N.Y.) stripped a Felician ball-handler and scurried in the other direction. He was fouled going to the basket, and made both free throws. Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) canned a jumper for the Golden Falcons, but the Clippers' Jason Cethoute (Queens, N.Y.) more than answered, knotting the score at 70-70 with a three from the left side at 0:57.

The Concordia defense forced Felician into a shot clock violation. With the timer now off, the Clippers ran the game clock down before Fields hit the eventual game-winner. Felician inbounded to Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.), who could only get off a desperation mid-court heave as time expired.

Stanford and Wright netted 18 points apiece. Felician point guard Mansfield Warren Jr. (South Amboy, N.J.) totaled six points, eight rebounds and five assists. Alex White Jr. (Middletown, Conn.) picked up 12 points and seven rebounds for Concordia.

Felician was ahead, 25-12, after 10 ½ minutes. The Clippers whittled that deficit down to three points before entering halftime trailing, 36-30. The second half featured seven ties and five lead changes leading up to Fields' heroics.

Felician plays its fourth consecutive conference road game on Thursday, facing Dominican (N.Y.) College at 7:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
