Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior swingman Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) scored nine points in the second overtime period to lead Felician University to an 80-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Spaulding finished the day with 28 points and 11 rebounds, playing all 50 minutes.
Felician's win, combined with conference losses by Post University and Nyack College on Saturday, allowed the Golden Falcons to clinch the fourth and final league playoff berth from the CACC North Division. Felician (11-14, 8-9 CACC) will play a quarterfinal road game on Tuesday, February 27, at a time and site to be determined. The Golden Falcons last reached the playoffs in 2013.
Spaulding's double-double was his eighth of the season, matching his total from last year. Felician received 14 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and four blocks from junior forward Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE). Williams leads the CACC with 12 double-doubles. Junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va./Patriot) led all scorers with 29 points and added nine rebounds for Chestnut Hill (5-19, 4-12).
The Golden Falcons led by as many as 13 points in the second period, and were still ahead, 50-43, with three minutes, 12 seconds, remaining. A lay-up and foul shot by Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J./Neumann-Goretti) made it 52-50 at the 1:49 mark, and each team scored on its next possession, bringing the game clock to 0:56.
Demetrius Issac (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) missed a tying free-throw attempt, but Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) responded in kind by splitting a pair on the other end to leave the Griffins within two points and the shot clock off. Issac overshot on a lay-up as time wound down, but Toplyn rebounded on the weak side and laid the ball in to force extra time. CHC's final three baskets of regulation came on putbacks.
Awl tallied all 10 of Chestnut Hill's points in the first overtime. He made a seemingly innocuous three-pointer with just over seven seconds to play and the Golden Falcons ahead by four. The Golden Falcons in-bounded to Spaulding, who was immediately fouled by Toplyn to disqualify the latter from the game. Spaulding made both free throws, but Awl made a contested, step-back three from the right elbow with 0:01.3 on the clock.
Williams won the second overtime's jump ball and his tap found Spaulding in stride for a lay-up. Felician went ahead by six points on Spaulding's driving lay-up with 3:18 to play. After Awl cut the deficit in half with another three, Felician junior Marlon Reid (Englewood, N.J.) answered with a jump shot in the lane and a steal on the other end. A Mansfield Warren Jr. (South Amboy, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) jumper made it 76-69, and the Golden Falcons led by as many as eight points down the stretch.
Stanford scored 16 points and Warren added 14. Reid produced season highs of eight points and 10 rebounds as the Golden Falcons amassed a 56-41 rebounding advantage. Toplyn accumulated 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Griffins.
The Golden Falcons were ahead by as many as 15 points in the first half, and carried a 28-16 edge into intermission. By the 11:54 mark of the second half, CHC was within 41-39, but never completely closed the gap until Toplyn's late putback.
The result marked the second consecutive year the teams needed two overtimes to decide their annual CACC affair. Felician also won last season's edition, 91-80, on Jan. 28, 2017, in northwest Philadelphia. Saturday's contest lasted two hours, 10 minutes.
Felician celebrates Senior Night on the occasion of its final home game of the season on Wednesday. Four Golden Falcon seniors – Jordan Compas (Yonkers, N.Y./St. Anthony-Jersey City [N.J.]), Vadji Dosso (Paris, France/St. Vincent de Paul), Jamar Redmond (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) and Stanford – will be honored prior to the 8 p.m. tipoff against regionally-ranked Bloomfield College.
