Felician Bows Out Of CACC Men's Basketball Championship

Box Score

WILMINGTON, Del. – Felician University committed 20 turnovers, its second-highest total of the season, in its 87-80 loss to host Goldey-Beacom College in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Championship tournament on Tuesday night before 575 fans at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Felician, the No. 4 seed from the CACC North Division, sees its season conclude with a won-lost record of 12-16. The Golden Falcons were making their first postseason appearance in five years. Goldey-Beacom, the CACC South Division regular-season champion, moves on to Saturday evening's  semifinals, where it will take on North No. 2 seed Dominican (N.Y.) College on the campus of the Jefferson Rams (formerly Philadelphia University).

Lightning junior guard Corey Taite (Sayreville, N.J.), who earlier on Tuesday was named the CACC Player of the Year, amassed 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. GBC junior Mahir Johnson (Chester, Pa.) (7-11 FG, 4-5 3FG, 4-4 FT) netted 22 points. First Team all-conference selection Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.) (11-18 FG) paced the Golden Falcons with 29 points and 12 rebounds, including the 1,000th point of his career.

Felician scored the game's first eight points, including five by Spaulding, in just 86 seconds. By the time there was 15:55 left in the first half, the Lightning had tied the score at 10-10. The Golden Falcons however, remained on top for most of the period, with its lead topping out at six points.

Goldey-Beacom went ahead for the first time, 37-35, on consecutive Taite three-pointers, the latter with 1:45 left before halftime. Felician senior Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) countered with a three, but the Lightning scored the final six points of the half and entered intermission ahead, 43-38. Felician trailed despite shooting 56 percent from the floor for the period.

The hosts maintained a lead of between three and eight points for much of the second period. On two occasions, the Golden Falcons turned the ball over after cutting their deficit to one possession. But after Felician sophomore Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) buried a jump shot to pull the visitors to within 66-62 at the 7:45 mark, the Golden Falcons went cold.

Several empty Felician possessions allowed the Lightning to push their lead to 11 and run the clock down near the four-minute mark. Another Wright three made it 73-65 with 4:09 to play, but GBC tallied the next five points, and the final seven-point margin was as close as the Golden Falcons would come thereafter.

Felician wasted a 42-28 rebounding advantage. Goldey-Beacom (20-9) was 17 for 18 at the foul line and outscored the Golden Falcons by eight points at the stripe. Wright scored 17 points with six rebounds and five assists and Stanford finished with 14 points.

Spaulding became the ninth Felician male to reach 1,000 points. He has scored 1,013 points in just 51 career games. A junior in terms of athletics eligibility, he is scheduled to graduate in May.
