Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J.) converted two free-throw attempts with seven-tenths of a second remaining in regulation time to lift Felician University to an 88-86 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Dominican (N.Y.) College on Tuesday night on the Hennessy Center's Coach Baxter Court.
Felician (3-4, 1-0 CACC) was playing its first conference game of the season. Sophomore swingman Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J.) (6-9 FG, 4-6 3FG) led five Golden Falcon double-figure scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The totals marked his second double-double of the season and the fifth of his career.
McRae finished with 13 points, six rebounds and a career-high five assists. He was 5 for 5 at the foul line.
Dominican (7-1, 2-1) entered the night unbeaten and with newly minted rankings in both recognized in-season national NCAA Division II polls -- No. 21 in the coaches' poll and No. 18 in the media version. The victory was the first for Felician over a nationally-ranked opponent (at the time of the game) in more than 10 years. The Golden Falcons defeated No. 19 Johnson C. Smith University, 72-68, on Nov. 21, 2009, in Charlotte, N.C. Felician also snapped a nine-game skid to the Chargers in Orangeburg, last winning in Hennessy on Feb. 11, 2010.
Charger senior guard Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points. Dominican received 15 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists from senior guard Jonathan Garcia (Springfield, Mass.).
The contest featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes. During the opening period, the sides were never separated by more than five points. Dominican was ahead, 11-6, in the early going, only to see the visitors reverse the script and move ahead, 24-19, with 8:31 left in the half. A three-point field goal by Brandt Roundtree (Plainfield, N.J.) put the hosts back up by five at the 0:53 mark, but Jackson answered it at 0:05 and Felician went into the break trailing, 43-41.
The Chargers' 51-45 edge following a Garcia three with 17:27 left turned out to be their largest of the night. Felician quickly erased the gap, moving ahead when Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J.) blocked a shot and fed Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) for a fast-break layup at the 16:00 mark as part of a 9-0 run.
With 6:20 to play, Felician was clinging to a one-point advantage before Jackson drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions. That seven-point spread was restored with 1:25 to play on a trey by Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), and at 0:23 the visitors were still ahead by six.
But Charger sophomore Wahaad Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) buried a jumper from behind the arc, and seconds later, Dominican came up with a steal in the backcourt. Ginyard was fouled while heaving a tying three-point attempt, and, with just over nine ticks left, made all three free throws to knot the score, 86-86.
As the game clock wound down, Felician dumped the ball to McRae in the low-post, and the second-year man appeared to convert a go-ahead lay-in. But the bucket was waved off and a foul called before the attempt. With the Chargers in the double-bonus, McRae sank both shots for the victory.
Wright finished with 16 points and Shimou tallied 15. Lewis scored 11 points with five rebounds in 16 minutes. Felician owned a 43-32 rebounding advantage, including 15-7 on the offensive glass.
Felician hosts Nyack College in CACC action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Felician athletics department will sponsor Fan Fest that afternoon. Golden Falcons rally towels will be handed out while supplies last, and free refreshments will be served from halftime of the women's basketball game between the Warriors and Golden Falcons until halftime of the men's game.
