Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A game which featured 14 lead changes saw Felician University come up short while needing one more swap during the Golden Falcons' 76-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball loss to visiting Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
Felician sophomore forward Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) recorded 22 points and seven rebounds. Jackson was 6 for 10 from three-point range. Sophomore forward Amir Warrick (Washington, D.C./St. Vincent Pallotti) came off the Chestnut Hill bench to make 9 of 12 field-goal attempts and register 22 points and eight rebounds.
The Griffins led, 44-42, at halftime, and the sides spend the entire second period within four points of each other. An 8-0 CHC run flipped a four-point deficit to a 67-63 lead for the visitors with nine minutes, 17 seconds, remaining in regulation time. But the Golden Falcons answered with the next seven points – four by Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) – to move back on top by three at the 6:27 mark.
When CHC freshman Scottie Spann Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa./Sankofa Freedom Academy) made 1 of 2 free throws at 2:53, the contest was knotted for the seventh and final time, 74-74. The teams traded turnovers before the Griffins obtained another defensive stop. A running jumper by freshman Julius Phillips (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with 1:23 left gave the Griffins the lead. The sides again turned the ball over to each other, giving Felician possession with 0:39 to play.
The Golden Falcons ran down the shot clock out of a timeout and Colon was fouled on a drive. He converted only the second free throw. But before Felician could foul intentionally, their defensive pressure created a bad pass out of bounds at 0:09. As the game clock wound reached its final ticks, the ball was dumped into the low post to Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) but his attempt from in close would not fall.
The Griffins (3-12, 3-3 CACC) piled up a 49-31 rebounding edge, led by Spann's 11-point, 13-rebound effort. Felician was also hampered by an 11-for-22 outing at the foul line.
The Golden Falcons (4-10, 2-4) fell behind, 12-2, in the early-going and were down, 30-17, with 12 minutes gone by. Five consecutive points by Jackson capped a 14-1 run which drew the hosts even with 4:35 left in the opening period.
McRae finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Felician redshirt freshman Jahid Jenkins (Newark, N.J./East Side) netted a season-high 10 points, and Colon ended up with nine.
Felician is home again on Wednesday to entertain the CACC North Division's co-leader, Post University. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Rutherford.
