Men's Basketball Loses, Falls Into Tie For Final Playoff Spot

Box Score

WATERBURY, Conn. – Offensive droughts cost Felician University leads in each half and ultimately resulted in its 68-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball loss to host Post University on Tuesday night at the Drubner Athletic Center.

The loss ended Felician's hopes of earning a 2020 home playoff game, handing Post at least the No. 2 seed from the CACC North Division in the upcoming conference championship tournament. Furthermore, the Golden Falcons (10-14, 8-8 CACC) fell 1 ½ games behind third-place Bloomfield College, and into a glut of three teams within one game for fourth place and the division's final postseason berth.

Golden Falcon senior forward Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J.) was 10 for 16 from the field. The rest of his team, however, was just 16 for 56 on the night, a 29 percent clip. Lewis led all scorers with 21 points, his third consecutive game of 20+ points and fifth of the season. He added six rebounds.

Lewis put Felician ahead, 60-59, with a three-point field goal with three minutes, nine seconds, remaining in regulation time. After an Eagle turnover, a layup by classmate Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J.) gave the visitors a three-point edge at the 2:22 mark. But the Golden Falcons did not score again for the rest of the night. Felician matched its lowest scoring output of the season.

The Eagles piled up a 22-10 edge in second-chance points. Post sophomore Devonte McCall (Amherst, Mass.) made a tying free throw with 1:36 to play and gave his team the lead for good from the foul line at 0:49. Both trips to the charity stripe were earned after grabbing offensive rebounds.

McCall finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots, pacing four double-figure scorers for the hosts. The Eagles blocked 11 Golden Falcon offerings during the game. Post senior swingman Marcus Johnson (Evanston, Ill.) turned in 13 points, nine boards and two rejections.

Felician led, 18-8, following a layup and free throw by sophomore Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J.) with 11:47 left in the first period, and was still ahead, 22-13, after a Marlon Reid (Englewood, N.J.) bucket with 10:27 showing on the clock. But the Golden Falcons were stuck on 22 for more than eight minutes, missing 15 consecutive shots before Lewis' dunk snapped a string of 17 consecutive Eagle points. Post entered halftime leading, 32-26.

Darrick Boyd (Springfield, Mass.) started the second half with a three-pointer to hand Post a nine-point edge. But the Golden Falcons stormed all the way back. Sophomore Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J.) netted seven points in 36 seconds to complete an 18-4 run which put Felician ahead, 41-37, at 15:48. The visitors led by as many as seven points after Lewis canned a jumper with 13:37 left.

Post pulled back to within 50-49 before a Johnson steal led to a Boyd layup and an Eagle lead at 9:02. A four-point play by Jonathan Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) followed. As the game clock wound under 6 ½ minutes, the Eagles still led by five before Lewis and Shimou capped Felician's next run.

The Eagles completed their comeback entirely at the foul line. They went 9 for 10 in the final 2:09 while forcing Felician to miss its final four field-goal attempts.

Felician sophomore Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J.) scored 15 points with five assists and four steals. Jared Pearson (Woodbridge, N.J.) had four points and nine rebounds in 10 bench minutes. Boyd scored 12 points for Post.

Felician saw a four-game winning streak ended, losing for the first time in February.

The Golden Falcons will travel to Bronxville, N.Y., on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip against Concordia (N.Y.) College. Felician is tied for fourth place with Caldwell University in the CACC North; the Golden Falcons and Cougars meet on Feb. 26 in Rutherford, N.J.
