Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University redshirt junior goalkeeper Pat Hemmer (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) recorded his 500th career save during the Golden Falcons' 13-8 men's lacrosse loss to visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The game was a non-conference contest between the two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference members.
Both sides were playing for the first time in two weeks. Dominican sophomore attackman Daniel Carson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led all players with five goals and added an assist. Redshirt freshman midfielder Robert Grasso (Islip, N.Y./Islip) recorded four goals, an assist, and a career-best eight ground balls for Felician (0-3).
Hemmer is the only goalie to ever start a game for Felician, a fourth-year program. He reached his latest milestone early in the second period. He is fifth among active NCAA Division II players in total saves (506) and first in saves per game (14.88) according to https://stats.ncaa.org.
Felician, which never led, was behind, 3-2, after the first quarter. The Chargers then took control by tallying three times in the first three minutes, one second, of period two. A James D'Albora (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) goal with 7:44 left until halftime pulled the Golden Falcons to within 7-4, but Carson found the cage twice in the time remaining and the hosts were held off the scoreboard to trail by five at the break.
Dominican freshman Cole Vernack (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) added a marker 2:22 into the third period. Felician trailed by that same six-goal margin, 12-6, at period's end and could muster only two Grasso scores down the stretch.
D'Albora scored twice and Anthony Hanratty (Hewitt, N.J./West Milford) had a goal and an assist for Felician (0-3). Golden Falcon sophomore Jose McLean-Byrd (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) was 16 for 25 from the faceoff spot with five ground balls. Hemmer finished with eight saves and five ground balls.
Charger keeper Steffen Peabody (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) earned the victory with nine saves. Vernack totaled three goals on three shots. Dominican improved to 1-1.
Felician will travel to Sparkill, N.Y., to face St. Thomas Aquinas College on March 28.
