Men's Basketball Pulls Away From Griffins For CACC Road Win

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Felician University men's basketball team outscored Chestnut Hill College, 24-11, over the game's final 10 minutes to earn an 86-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the host Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

Felician (7-4, 2-1 CACC) put six scorers in double figures to win for the fourth time in its last five outings. Redshirt junior guard Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J.) topped the Golden Falcons with 20 points, and classmates Justin Davis (Jersey City, N.J.) (nine rebounds) and Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J.) (four assists) tallied 14 apiece.

Felician was playing for the first time in 19 days. The Golden Falcons were off for a week for the annual NCAA Division II "dark" period, then had three consecutive CACC contests postponed due to health and safety protocols stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.

Despite the idle period, the Golden Falcons were on target offensively. Saturday's visitors shot 50 percent from the field and, led by Colon's 8-for-8 effort, were 13 of 14 (92.9 percent) at the free-throw line. Felician committed only 11 turnovers, as compared to 13 assists.

Felician led, 33-24, following a Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J.) three-point field goal with six minutes, 47 seconds, remaining in the first half, but settled for a 39-39 halftime deadlock. Chestnut Hill took its largest lead of the day, 59-54, after a four-point play by James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) with 12:35 left in regulation time, and was still ahead, 66-62, on a pair of Rider foul shots at the 10:31 mark.

Felician scored the next eight points, taking the lead on Davis' putback dunk with 8:27 left, and never trailed again. The Griffins remained within two possessions, and inched back to 76-74 when Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) converted a layup with 3:50 showing on the game clock. But the Golden Falcons held CHC scoreless for its next four possessions, enough time to build an eight-point lead with 1:01 to play and seal the game at the foul line.

Jackson scored 13 points with nine rebounds and freshman Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) had 10 points and eight rebound off the bench for Felician, which owned a 40-30 edge on the glass. The Golden Falcons also received 13 points from sophomore guard Nas Amos (Newark, N.J.). Rider's 16 points topped the Griffins (6-6, 3-1) on the day.

Felician hosts Wilmington (Del.) University on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J. The game is a makeup from a postponement on January 2.
