Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J.) scored 20 of his 26 points in the second half and classmate Etnik Peci (Pristina, Kosovo) also had 26 points as Felician University earned a 93-90 victory over host Chestnut Hill College during a quarterfinal matchup in the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Basketball Championship tournament on Tuesday evening at Sorgenti Arena.
Felician (17-9), the No. 3 seed from the CACC North Division, advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2010. On Saturday, the Golden Falcons face North No. 1 seed Post University at 2 p.m. at Caldwell University, with the winner moving on to Sunday's championship game. Post earned a 100-89 home win over Wilmington (Del.) University on Tuesday.
"Congratulations to Chestnut Hill; they had very good season and played a tough game tonight," said Colon, a Felician tri-captain. "Now we have to prepare for a well-coached Post team on Saturday. We're looking forward to the challenge."
Felician never led during Tuesday's first half. The Griffins (14-13), the South Division No. 2 seed, jumped in front, 23-11, after 7 ½ minutes, and were up by as many as 16 points during the opening period. CHC was ahead, 48-37, at halftime.
Still down by 10 with 16:46 to play, the visitors steadily chipped away at their deficit. Felician drew even at 70-70 on a Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J.) free throw at the 8:50 mark, and took their first lead when McRae canned a three-point field goal at 7:55 to cap a 10-0 run. Felician would go on to build an eight-point lead on three occasions, the last time with 2:23 left, then overcame a pair of turnovers by going 6 for 6 at the foul line during the final 34 seconds to hang on. The Griffins misfired on a contested three-pointer at the buzzer.
"We stayed the course and didn't let anything rattle us," Colon said. "Our composure allowed us to continue to battle and gut out a win."
Justin Davis (Jersey City, N.J.) scored 12 points with eight rebounds and McRae added 11 points for Felician, which outscored the Griffins, 25-9, at the foul line. M.J. Iraldi (West Deptford, N.J.) led CHC with 25 points.
"It's always tough to get a playoff win no matter where or when or who you play," Colon said. "It's definitely something we can appreciate, but the job's not done, and most importantly, we aren't satisfied yet."
