Correia Knots, Ends 9-8 Overtime Men's Lacrosse Victory

Box Score

PARAMUS, N.J. – Felician University freshman attackman Filipe Correia (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) tied the game with 26 seconds left in regulation, then scored the golden goal 25 seconds into overtime, to lead the Golden Falcons to a 9-8 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over visiting American International College on Saturday afternoon at Paramus Catholic High School.

Correia recorded the first overtime goal in the five-year history of the Felician program. It allowed the hosts to complete a comeback from a 5-1 second-quarter deficit. He also had two assists and three ground balls on the day.

Felician (4-3), trailed, 6-3, at halftime, and 7-6 after three periods. There was no scoring for the final 7:28 of the third, but 98 seconds into the fourth quarter, Alfonso Guerrero (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) found the cage to tie the game for the first time since it was 1-1.

American International (1-5) moved back ahead on a Vincent Orlandi (Cummington, Mass./Waconah Regional) marker with 7:15 remaining. During the game's final five minutes, the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on four consecutive possessions, but the Golden Falcon offense came up empty. Finally, as AIC attempted a final clear to run out the clock, the ball got away. Felician senior defender Cody Hildebrand (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) scooped the ground ball and played it ahead to Robert Grasso (Islip, N.Y./Islip), who found Correia for the equalizer.

A last-second attack by Felician during regulation time was broken up. But Tajae McLean-Byrd (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) won the faceoff to start overtime, and Felician called a quick timeout. On the restart, Jabes Escalante (Chelsea, Mass./Chelsea) carried the ball behind the cage, exited the opposite side, spun to create space, and hit Correia in stride in front of the goal for the game-winning shot.

Grasso recorded a game-high three goals and one assist. Escalante and Finn Crocker (South Hamilton, Mass./Beverly) notched a goal and an assist apiece for Felician. Golden Falcon freshman goalkeeper Nick Grebe (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) earned the victory with 14 saves and four ground balls.

AIC freshman goalie Nick Mee (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) amassed 23 saves and seven ground balls. Felician outshot the Yellow Jackets, 60-36, and owned a 47-32 edge in ground balls. McLean-Byrd topped Felician with eight ground balls while winning 13 of 21 faceoffs.

Felician begins the season's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule by hosting Post University on Wednesday at noon at Tryon Field in Rutherford.
