Box Score NEWARK, Del. – Felician University was defeated by host Wilmington (Del.) University, 22-3, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. Wilmington (7-3, 3-0 CACC) is ranked No. 20 in the most recent national USILA Division II poll, and No. 16 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine version.
Felician redshirt junior faceoff man Tajae McLean Byrd (Bronx, N.Y.) had four ground balls during the contest. He became the first player in Golden Falcon history to record 100 ground balls in a season, currently with 102. He ranks fifth nationally in Division II in ground balls in 2002, and his 9.27 ground balls per game this season are seventh in the country.
McLean Byrd also won 12 of 27 faceoffs on Wednesday to surpass 500 faceoff wins for his career. He is currently 506-832 (.608), with his win total third among active Division II players.
Wilmington freshman T.J. Caton (Palmyra, Pa.) opened the scoring at the 12:32 mark of the first period, but Golden Falcon rookie Filipe Correia (Brick, N.J.) answered 19 seconds later. The next two goals went to the Wildcats before Felician sophomore Robert Grasso (Islip, N.Y.) pulled the visitors within 3-2 at the 4:28 mark of the first.
However, the visitors were held off the scoreboard for the next 37 minutes as the Wildcats took control. Wilmington sophomore Logan Stinson (Lafayette, La.) found the cage at 0:47 of the first, and again at 8:45 of the third. The hosts then tallied four times during the final 2 ½ minutes of the first half.
Wilmington carried the momentum through halftime, outscoring Felician, 8-0 during the third period and scoring twice during the first two minutes of the fourth. Golden Falcon sophomore Alfonso Guerrero (Bellmore, N.Y.) recorded his team's final goal of the day.
Sophomore Giovanni Marino (Woolwich, N.J.) led Wilmington with five goals and added an assist. Caton (four goals, one assist, six ground balls, and Stinson (three goals, three assists, five ground balls, three caused turnovers) enjoyed strong two-way efforts.
Grasso matched McLean-Byrd for the Felician lead with four ground balls. Wilmington enjoyed a 51-25 shot advantage.
