Baseball Earns Rare Sweep Of Wilmington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Freshman reliever Chet Godfrey (Millville, NJ/Millville) retired all nine batters he faced to finish Felician College's 4-2 Game 2 victory over visiting Wilmington (Del.) University and its sweep of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Senior right-hander Brian Dudzinski (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) pitched Felician's first complete game of the season, a 5-hitter, in his team's 3-1 Game 1 triumph.

The victories marked the first doubleheader sweep of Wilmington by Felician in the 13-year history of the Golden Falcon program. The Wildcats (13-12, 3-6) are the defending CACC champions and are ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll. Sunday's twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed a day by rain.

In the nightcap, Wilmington erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs on the top of the sixth inning off of Golden Falcon starter D.J. Stinsman (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township). Pinch-hitter Bryan Miller's (West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester CC) RBI single was followed by a sacrifice fly from catcher Matt Lopes (Deerfield Beach, FL/Deerfield Beach). Stinsman (6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) exited after allowing a leadoff single in the seventh.

Godfrey (2-3) escaped the seventh without any damage, and the Felician offense struck for three runs in the bottom of the frame off the Wildcat bullpen. With runners on first and third and two outs, Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, George Hajjar (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) delivered the go-ahead single to left field, and Mike Farrell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) would score an insurance run on a throwing error.

That was enough for Godfrey, who threw 19 of his 22 pitches for strikes in three innings. Hajjar and Jay Collazo (Wall Township, NJ/Manasquan) each went 2 for 4 for the Golden Falcons. B.J. Janney (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) had a pair of hits for the Wildcats, and starting pitcher David Hatt (Toronto, Canada/Burlington CC) scattered seven hits and struck out three in five innings in a no-decision.

Dudzinski stranded seven Wilmington baserunners in Game 1, mostly in the early going. He surrendered a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder to Jordan Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk CC) in the third inning, and escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fourth. He then retired 16 of his last 17 batters while waiting for his offense to get untracked.

Wildcat lefthander Jaime Treml (Bear, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) (2-2) was masterful for six innings, giving up two hits and striking out nine batters, before the Golden Falcons broke through against him in the seventh. With runners on first and third and one out, Farrell produced a game-tying single down the left field line. An infield single by Hajjar chased Treml, and Miguel Hidalgo's (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial) fielder's choice grounder then plated Joe Petosa (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) with the go-ahead run.

Felician added an insurance run in the eighth on Petosa's two-out RBI single, and Dudzinski retired the Wildcats in order in the ninth on a pop-up, fly out, and strikeout. The CACC's strikeout leader, Dudzinski fanned four and walked three.
