Caldwell No-Hits Baseball Team

Box Score

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Felician College baseball team was unable to muster a base hit in its 7-2 non-conference loss to host Caldwell College on Thursday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval.

Freshman right-hander Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ) (2-3) went the distance on the no-hit gem for Caldwell, striking out six batters, walking two, and hitting one. It was the first-time Felician was no-hit since February 28, 2009, by Gabriel Duran of Dowling College. The accomplishment was the first no-hitter for the Cougars' program since 2003.

The game remained tight through the first five innings. Caldwell (10-23) picked up two runs on only one base hit off of two Felician pitchers in the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Falcons sliced the lead in half in the fourth when leadoff man Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ) was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second base, stole third, and scored on a throwing error.

However, the Cougars broke the contest open with a big inning in the sixth, plating five unearned runs. After reliever Steven Harrison (Boca Raton, FL) retired the first two hitters of the frame, Caldwell put together consecutive infield hits. Back-to-back Golden Falcon errors extended the inning and allowed a run to score, Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY) followed with an RBI single, and Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY) capped the rally with a three-run double.

The drama then turned to Sheridan, who allowed another unearned run in the seventh. After a walk and an error put runners at the corners, the Golden Falcons pulled to within 7-2 on Mike Farrell's (Lincroft, NJ) fielder's choice grounder. But that out began a stretch that would see Sheridan retired his final nine batters. He completed the no-hitter in the ninth with a strikeout, ground ball back to the mound, and a grounder to shortstop.

Felician starter Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) (0-2) suffered the loss despite departing with a blister after two-plus innings. Vasto struck out two, walked three, and hit a batter but did not allow a base hit.

Ynoa finished 3 for 4 with four RBI, and Phil Ragusa (Berlin, NJ) and Robert Humes (Staten Island, NY) each went 2 for 3 as part of Caldwell's nine-hit attack.
