Dudzinski Sets Strikeout Record In Felician Win

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Winning pitcher Brian Dudzinski (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) set a Felician College single-game record with 14 strikeouts to lead the Golden Falcons to a 4-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball victory over visiting Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

The two teams were scheduled to play a conference doubleheader on Saturday. However, shortly after the completion of Game 1, the second contest was postponed due to lightning and the forecast of thunderstorms.

Dudzinski (4-5), a transfer from Division-I Furman University, allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings, while giving up just an unearned run in the seventh. The 6-foot-6 senior right-hander struck out the side in the first and sixth innings, and retired all nine Concordia starters on strikes at least once. Felician pitchers struck out 17 batters on the night.

Dudzinski used the strikeout as a weapon to escape three major jams. In the first, Clipper leadoff man Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) walked and advanced all the way to third on Dudzinski's errant pickoff throw. Felician brought its infield in, and Dudzinki stranded Berrios at third on a grounder to short and two strikeouts. Concordia (10-29, 8-9) put runners on second and third and one out in the second inning, but again was held scoreless after consecutive punchouts.

In the seventh, with Felician ahead, 3-0, Concordia's David Perlleshi (Eastchester, NY) lofted a sacrifice fly to score Yonatan Rodriguez (Tarrytown, NY), who had reached on an error. A hit batsman and a double-steal then put runners on second and third with one out, but Dudzinski completed his night with two more strikeouts for the record.

The Golden Falcons (19-20, 11-4) used a two-out rally to take a 2-0 lead in the third. Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ) singled, stole second, and scored on Jay Collazo's (Wall Township, NJ/Manasquan) RBI single. Collazo advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch. Joe Petosa (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) helped create Felician's final two runs, scoring on an error in the sixth and producing an RBI single in the seventh.

Zudonyi doubled, scored twice, and was among four Golden Falcon starters with two hits. Left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) pitched a hitless eighth, and Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) allowed Concordia to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth before striking out the final batter for his third save.

Clipper starter Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY) (2-6) gave up three runs (one earned) on seven this with six strikeouts. Teammate Joe Gallub (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) was 2 for 3.

Phil Messerian held the previous Felician record for strikeouts in a game with 13, turning the trick twice during the 2010 season.

Felician maintained its hold on second place in the CACC. The Golden Falcons meet first-place Bloomfield College on Wednesday for a noon doubleheader in Newark.
