ESU Gets By Felician, 7-5, In Sloppy Affair

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Four Felician College errors led the Golden Falcons to surrender four unearned runs in their 7-5 non-conference baseball loss to visiting East Stroudsburg University on Thursday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

The early innings were active offensively, as Felician (7-13) led, 4-3, after two frames. Senior third-baseman Mike Farrell (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) lined a double to the opposite field in right to drive in all three Golden Falcon second-inning tallies. East Stroudsburg tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by junior shortstop Eric Linares (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell).

In the fifth, the Warriors (4-3) took the lead for good with a pair of runs, chasing Felician starting pitcher Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) (3-1). ESU leadoff man Drew Hercik (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) doubled and scored four batters later on a Chris Knott (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./EHT) sacrifice fly. Warrior senior Eric Boyer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who had walked, came across the plate later in the inning on a Felician throwing error.

Golden Falcon sophomore Lawrence Schoer (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) walked and eventually scored on a two-out ESU error in the bottom of the fifth to pull the hosts within 6-5. But Felician was held without a hit the rest of the way.

Warrior senior right-hander Colin Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) (1-0) earned the victory with 5 2/3 innings of hitless relief work. He gave up just one unearned run, struck out six batters, and walked two. Junior Keith Moyer (Souderton, Pa/Souderton) worked around a two-out walk to retire the side in the ninth inning for his second save.

Facendo struck out seven batters and issued one walk, departing after running a pitch count into the high 90s through 4 2/3 innings. He was charged with six runs (three earned) on six hits.

Despite finishing the day with only three hits, the Golden Falcons left eight runners on base. Felician drew nine walks and was hit by pitches three times, and had three runners erased on the basepaths. In the eighth, the Golden Falcons loaded the bases after one was out, without a hit, off of Kelly. Kelly recovered to record a strikeout, and the inning ended on Linares' diving catch of a line drive by Jonathan Arche (Miami, Fla./Ferguson).

Junior Chris Faber (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) doubled for Felician and Arche had the hosts' other hit. Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) walked twice and scored twice. Boyer and Eric Forth (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) were both 2 for 4 for ESU.

The Golden Falcons and Warriors were meeting for the first time since 2005.

Felician will attempt to snap a five-game losing streak when it opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Saturday in a road doubleheader against the University of the Sciences. Game time for Game 1 has been changed to noon (originally 1 p.m.).
