Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Adelphi University scored eight first-inning runs en route to a 12-2 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Felician College on Wednesday afternoon at Bonomo Field.
After Felician was retired on one hit in the top of the first inning, Adelphi (6-5-1) put its first 10 batters on base, on nine hits and an error, in the bottom half. Golden Falcon freshman left-hander Chris Falcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) (0-4) was lifted before getting an out, charged with all eight runs (six earned).
After freshman Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) finished the first inning and pitched a perfect second, Felician (7-14) used six pitchers for one inning each to complete the contest. Adelphi tacked on a run in the fourth and three in the sixth and out-hit the Golden Falcons, 15-7.
Felician tallied in the third inning when Chris Faber (Neptune, N.J.) led off with a double and scored two batters later on Gabriel Fellin's (Temple, Pa.) hit. The only other run for the visitors came in the ninth. Mike Mazza (Point Pleasant, N.J.) singled, moved up on a balk and a fly ball, and came home on a groundout by Andrew Lombardi (Boonton, N.J.). Fellin finished 3 for 4 on the day.
Panther senior first-baseman Anthony Zarrella (Holbrook, N.Y.) was 3 for 3 with a double and scored twice. Sophomore Nick Zito (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove in four runs, including a three-run double in the sixth, and Vinny Gaetano (Utica, N.Y.) had a two-run first-inning triple among three RBI. Vincent Sharkey (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was 2 for 2 in the opening frame.
Adelphi starting pitcher Stephen Bove (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (1-0) worked through five innings to earn the victory. The junior rightly allowed one run on five hits and did not walk a batter. Four Panther relievers combined to give up one run on two hits.
