Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician College baseball team left nine runners on base in its 5-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College on Friday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Dominican (3-6, 2-1) scored four of its five runs with two outs.
Felician (7-15, 0-1), playing its first conference game of 2013, fell victim to an efficient performance by Charger sophomore right-handed pitcher Peter Martinez (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains). Making his first start of the season, Martinez (2-1) scattered seven hits, all singles, over eight innings, giving up one earned run. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
Leading, 3-2, after seven frames, Dominican gave itself some breathing room in the top of the eighth. After pinch-hitter Leonardo Bravo (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) beat the relay throw on a potential double-play grounder, teammate Kenny Harrell (Pompano Beach, Fla./Pompano) looped a two-run double into right-center field to provide the visitors a three-run cushion.
Martinez worked around a two-out walk to get through the eighth, but the Golden Falcons sent the potential winning run to the plate off of reliever Matthew Festa (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) in the ninth. Felician put its first two runners on base on an error and a walk, but Festa rebounded to retire the next two hitters.
Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa/Muhlenberg) walked to load the bases. Festa then got ahead of Felician junior catcher Jay Collazo (Wall, N.J./Manasquan) 0-and-2 before inducing a ground ball to short to end the game. Festa was credited with his first save of the season.
Dominican took a quick lead when Tony Blake (Windsor, Conn./Northwest Catholic) and Oliver Christensen (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades) produced first-inning RBI singles. Collazo's run-scoring hit in the fourth cut Felician's deficit in half, but the Chargers came right back in the top of the fifth, putting its first two runners on base and plating a run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Camardella (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial).
Golden Falcon senior righty Vic Monteagudo (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) (1-3) worked through seven-plus innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. His eight strikeouts allowed him to take over the CACC lead with 34. Felican has scored only 10 runs during Monteagudo's five starts this season.
Fellin and Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) each went 2 for 4 for the Golden Falcons. Junior Chris Faber (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh. Felician was 2 for 11 on the day with runners in scoring position. Blake finished 2 for 4 with a triple for the Chargers.
Felician has lost seven consecutive games. The Golden Falcons' CACC doubleheader against Post University on Saturday has been moved from Danbury, Conn., to the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex and will now begin at 4 p.m.
