Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. – A tie-breaking grand slam home run by junior designated hitter Jordan Tackett (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the top of the eighth inning lifted Felician College to a 7-3 non-conference baseball victory over nationally-ranked Stonehill College on Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball Week event hosted by Rollins College at Alfond Stadium. Felician (7-9) settled for a split of its two games on the day with a 17-2 loss to the host Tars on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Falcons defeated Stonehill for the second consecutive day, and salvaged a split of teams' four-game season series. The Skyhawks (8-3) are the No. 21 team in the most recent national NCAA Division II writers' poll.
Against Stonehill, Tackett, a mid-year transfer from Patrick Henry Community College, keyed Felician's comeback from a 3-1 deficit by going 3 for 5 with six runs batted in, one short of the school record. He is the fifth player in Golden Falcon history to drive in at least six runs in a game, and the first to do so in a wood-bat contest.
After scoring Felician's first run of the game on a two-out single by Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.) in the fifth, Tackett stepped up again in the next frame with two on and two out and blasted a game-tying triple. In the eighth, the Golden Falcons loaded the bases after one was out on a walk, error, and hit batsman. Tackett then sent an Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I.) (1-1) offering over the right-field fence for Felician's first grand slam since Evan Mancini's on March 18, 2009.
Sophomore left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J.) (1-0) earned the victory with three innings of scoreless relief work. Freshman Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) had made his first career start for Felician and gave up two earned runs on six hits in six innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Rugel, who yielded all seven Golden Falcon runs (six earned), allowed eight hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa) and Chris Faber (Toms River, N.J.) added two hits apiece to Felician's 11-hit attack. Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I.) was 2 for 5 with two RBI for the Skyhawks.
In Felician's night game, Rollins (10-6) led, 6-2, after six innings, then broke things wide open with seven runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth off of the Golden Falcon bullpen. Sophomore righty John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) (1-1) worked through five innings in his first collegiate start, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
Fellin posted another two-hit game and stole two bases, while Tackett had a double for Felician. Rollins junior Hunter Mayfield (Tallahassee, Fla.) and senior Steve Betcherman (Toronto, Ontario) stroked three hits apiece, and senior Brandon Curson (Woodstock, Ga.) had two doubles and four RBI. Left-handed pitcher Jack Murray (Milford, Mass.) (2-2) limited Felician to two runs (one earned) in five hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
