Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The third error of the game by Felician College allowed a tie-breaking unearned run to score in the top of the eighth inning, sending the Golden Falcons to a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball loss to visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
The victory for Dominican (18-12, 13-2 CACC) allowed it to extend its lead in the CACC standings to a full game over Wilmington (Del.) University. Felician's setback, meanwhile, when combined with other conference results on Tuesday, dropped the Golden Falcons into eighth in the 11-team league with six games to play. The top six at season's end will qualify for the CACC Tournament.
With the game tied, 1-1, after seven innings, and offense at a premium, Felician reliever Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) (4-3) struck out the first two Charger hitters in the top of the eighth. Facendo then issued a walk, on a 3-and-2 pitch, to reigning CACC Player of the Week Tony Blake (Windsor, Conn./Northwest Catholic), and Blake promptly stole second base.
Dominican freshman Carlos Lopez (Miami, Fla./Mater Lakes Academy followed with a liner to third base. The ball went into and out of the glove of Golden Falcon third-sacker Mike Farrell (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) and down the left field line. The play was ruled an error, and Blake scored from second base.
Charger junior left-hander Ryan Calby (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (2-1) retired the side in order in the home half of the eighth, then worked around a one-out single in the ninth to complete a five-hitter. Calby gave up only an uneared run in the fourth, struck out five batters and walked one. He needed just 94 pitches for his nine-inning effort.
Both teams first dented the scoreboard in the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, with two on and two out against Felician starter Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Hendrick Hudson), Andrew Camardella (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) grounded a run-scoring single off of the third-base bag. Felician matched when Farrell singled with one out and eventually came home on a throwing error.
Vasto picked up four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings before departing after running up a pitch count of 115. Facendo yielded one hit with five punchouts in 3 1/3 innings out of the Golden Falcon bullpen. Farrell finished 2 for 3. Blake was 2 for 3, stole three bases, and scored both Dominican runs.
All nine base hits in the game were singles.
