Box Score 2 CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team came up with late-inning go-ahead runs in winning both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader over visiting Felician College, 5-3 and 9-3, on Tuesday evening at the Kiwanis Oval. Caldwell (5-15, 3-3 CACC) scored nine of its 14 runs on the day against the Golden Falcon bullpen.
Freshman first-baseman Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J.) picked up three doubles in the twinbill for Felician (10-19, 3-4).
The Cougars won Game 1 in come-from-behind fashion on the strength of a three-run eighth inning. With his team ahead, 3-2, Felician reliever John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) (1-2) issued walks to the first two Caldwell hitters of the inning. Junior third-baseman Joe O'Donnnell (Belleville, N.J.) then tied the game with a double, leaving runners on second and third bases. Two batters later, Holland uncorked a third-strike wild pitch, plating Paul Nyitray (Cranford, N.J.) with the go-ahead run.
Junior catcher Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, N.Y.) then gave the Cougars an insurance run, chasing Holland with an RBI double. Junior right-hander Dan Bartlett (Levittown, N.Y.) (1-4) worked a perfect top of the ninth, earning the victory with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.
Felician took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. The Golden Falcons, however, missed chances to pull away, totaling 11 runners left on base. Caldwell began its comeback by scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Robert Humes (Berlin, N.J.) and Nyitray. In the top of the seventh, Bartlett entered to record a strikeout and escape a bases-loaded jam.
Both starting pitchers were effective in no-decisions. Caldwell sophomore righty Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, N.J.) allowed two earned runs on eight hits and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings. Golden Falcon sophomore lefty Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) retired his first 11 batters, then departed after six frames having given up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Mike Farrell (Red Bank, N.J.) and De Jong had RBI doubles for Felician, which out-hit the Cougars, 9-7. They joined Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa.) and Jay Collazo (Wall, N.J.) with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Felician erased a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, only to see the Cougars break the tie with two of their own in the bottom half. The go-ahead runs for the hosts came on a two-out, two-run single by Thomas Pisano (North Bellmore, N.Y.) that barely eluded the grasp of diving Golden Falcon right-fielder Matt Caposio (Staten Island, N.Y.). Caldwell then put the game away with four eighth-inning tallies.
Felician starting pitcher Stephen Paladino (Staten Island, N.Y.) carried a no-hitter into the fifth before yielding a two-out, two-run double to O'Donnell in that inning. Paladino departed after 5 1/3, having given up three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Left-handed reliever Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J.) (1-2) was saddled with the loss.
Caldwell sophomore righty Chris DeRogatis (North Arlington, N.J.) (2-1) tossed 147 pitches (91 strikes) in a complete-game victory. He allowed one earned run on six hits, struck out eight batters and walked three. After Collazo beat the throw to the plate on Farrell's fielder's choice grounder in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3, DeRogatis retired the final eight batters he faced.
Junior shortstop Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI to pace Felician. De Jong and Caposio also blasted two-baggers. Pisano finished 2 for 4 and drove in four runs.
Felician fell to 0-5 at Kiwanis Oval since Caldwell began using the facility in 2011.
The Golden Falcons are on the road again on Saturday, with a CACC doubleheader against nationally-ranked Wilmington (Del.) University.
