Box Score POMONA, N.Y. – After scoring its first four runs without the benefit of a base hit, St. Thomas Aquinas College rolled up a 15-6 hit advantage in its 11-2 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Felician College on Tuesday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. St. Thomas Aquinas (18-10) is ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.
Felician (10-22) picked up a first-inning run when leadoff man Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk and came all the way around on a double in the right-center field gap by junior Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.). But the Golden Falcons left Brill stranded, and STAC went ahead for good with an unusual rally in the home half of the first.
Felician freshman right-hander Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) (0-3) issued walks to the first two hitters he faced, then committed a balk to allow both to advance. Loucka struck out the next batter on a breaking ball in the dirt, but the ball kicked away, allowing the batter to reach first and both runners to score.
Following a groundout, another walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Loucka uncorked a second run-scoring wild pitch, and Spartan senior Felipe Campusano (New York, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly, provoking the Golden Falcons to make a pitching change. Andrew Romanella (Allentown, N.J.) then capped the five-run uprising with an RBI infield single, STAC's only hit of the inning.
A sacrifice fly by Golden Falcon junior Jordan Tackett (Fredericksburg, Va.) pulled the visitors to within 5-2 in the top of the fourth, but STAC answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth, then put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore righty Kevin Rentas (Bronx, N.Y.) (3-0) started and pitched five innings to earn the victory, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out three.
STAC senior center fielder Nicholas Barbalato (Mahopac, N.Y.) was 2 for 4 with a home run and four runs batted in. He was of six Spartans to enjoy a two-hit day, including junior Nick D'Angelo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) off the bench. Senior catcher Mike Russo (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a double and a solo homer.
Freshman first-baseman Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J.) was 2 for 4 for Felician. Freshman pitcher Chris Falcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) struck out four batters in 4 1/3 innings of relief work.
Felician will attempt to snap a five-game losing streak when it hosts Mercy College on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
