Dowling Gets Past Felician With 4-Run Tenth

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Dowling College scored four times in the top of the tenth inning to earn an 8-4 non-conference baseball victory over host Felician College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician was playing the final contest of its 2013 home schedule.

The teams combined for 24 base hits and 12 walks, and together left 23 runners on base. The game lasted three hours, 26 minutes.

Felician (18-28) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead, but Dowling drew even with single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Golden Falcons put their leadoff man on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, including a double by Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) to start the ninth. But the hosts came up empty each time, forcing extra innings.

Senior right-hander Brett Hauber (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) (0-1), the sixth Felician pitcher of the day, entered to start the 10th inning and issued a leadoff walk to Golden Lion sophomore left fielder Adam Schuster (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). On the first pitch to Kyle DeMeo (Franklin Square, N.Y./Frank Carey), Schuster stole second base.

DeMeo then got a sacrifice bunt down, and reached safely when the throw to first base was wild. Schuster scored the go-ahead run on the play. Two batters later, Kevin Kerman (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) stroked a run-scoring single, and Ian Schneider (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) capped the rally with a two-out, two-run double.

Dowling freshman Billy Goncalves (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) pitched the final two innings for his first career victory. He escaped a two-on, one-out jam with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth, before working around a one-out single in the 10th.

Felician starting pitcher Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) was saddled with his seventh no-decision in 10 starts this season. The sophomore left-hander worked six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The top three hitters in the Golden Falcon line-up were 7 for 15, producing the majority of the hosts' 10 hits. Brill finished 3 for 5, and Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) (2 runs) and Jay Collazo (Wall, N.J./Manasquan) (2 RBI) collected two hits apiece. J.C. Brandmaier (Bellmore, N.Y./Mempham) and Dominick Raucci (Seaford, N.Y./Island Trees) were each 3 for 5 and Schneider drove in three runs for Dowling (19-18-1).

Felician has three more regular-season road games remaining before participating in the playdown round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on May 7.
