Baseball Drops Lengthy Twinbill to East Stroudsburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILSON, N.C. – East Stroudsburg University battered Felician College pitching for 40 runs on 30 hits to sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the Golden Falcons, 29-1 and 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Fleming Stadium. The twinbill, played with metal bats, lasted nearly 7 ¼ hours.

Felician (0-3) is ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II East Region preseason writers' poll. East Stroudsburg (3-0) is the No. 10-ranked squad in the Atlantic Region.

Game 1 represented the most runs allowed and largest losing margin by Felician in the 16-year history of its program, both surpassing a 25-8 setback to Mercy College on April 13, 2000. The Golden Falcons used eight pitchers who gave up 23 hits, including 11 for extra bases, yielded nine walks, and hit three batters. Felician also committed eight errors that led to eight unearned runs.

East Stroudsburg, the designated home team, scored in seven of its eight offensive innings, plating at least three runs in each of the first six frames. After jumping out to an 11-0 lead after three innings, the Warriors enjoyed a nine-run fourth. Winning pitcher Ian Allen (East Aurora, N.Y.) tossed four scoreless innings and went 4 for 5 at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in.

ESU leadoff man Casey Saverio (Ambler, Pa.) was 4 for 6 plus a walk, scored four runs, and drove in two. Junior left fielder Matt Walewski (Lebanon, Pa.) had three doubles, four runs scored and four RBI, and junior first-baseman Dylan Tamecki (Dillsburg, Pa.) also drove in four runs.

Felician freshman left fielder Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y.) was 2 for 5. Polgano tripled and scored on an error in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Sean Rogers (Kendall Park, N.J.) went 2 for 3 with a double and classmate Rob Fisher (Matawan, N.J.) also doubled for the Golden Falcons. Junior right-hander John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) started on the mound and took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) in one-plus inning.

The nightcap, a scheduled seven-inning affair with Felician as the home team, was tied, 3-3, after five innings before the Warriors broke through for a seven-run sixth. Three runs came home on a Felician bases-loaded throwing error, two on passed balls, and two on a Tamecki double. The Golden Falcons tallied three times in the bottom of the sixth before falling short.

Felician out-hit ESU, 10-7, but the Warriors drew 11 walks and stole six bases. Junior righty Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) (0-1) lasted 5 1/3 innings for the Golden Falcons, giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits.

Felician sophomore Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J.) was 3 for 4 with a double. Classmate Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J.) was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI, and Polgano was on base three times, scoring twice.
