Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician College used strong pitching outings from junior right-handers John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) and Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) to sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the University of Bridgeport, 3-1 and 3-2, on Saturday at the Ripken Experience complex.
The games were part of the Northeast Challenge event. Felician (2-4) is ranked No. 6 in the preseason NCAA Division II Northeast Region writers poll.
In the teams' morning contest, Holland (1-1) pitched a complete-game four-hitter, allowing only an unearned run in the eighth inning. In a 97-pitch effort, he struck out five batters and did not walk or hit anyone.
For the better part of the morning, Holland was locked in a pitchers' duel with Bridgeport junior lefty Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.). Through six innings, the teams were tied, 0-0, with only two hits for the Golden Falcons and three for the Purple Knights.
Felician, the designated visiting team, broke through against Egeland (0-1) in the top of the seventh. With one out, Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J.) drew his third walk of the game and advanced to third base on a double by Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y.). Following an intentional walk and a strikeout, Golden Falcon leadoff man Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla.) blasted a triple to deep right field to plate all three runners.
Freshman second-baseman Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.) was 2 for 4 for Felician. Bridgeport junior Bryan Kondor (Shelton, N.J.) had a pinch-hit RBI single.
Felician scored on a two-out UB error and a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie in the nightcap. The second run in the frame proved crucial when Loucka surrendered a two-out RBI single to Mike Miniter (Branford, Conn.) in the top of the ninth. But Rob Naughton (Levittown, N.Y.) came on to induce a pop-up and earn his first save as a Golden Falcon.
Loucka surrendered two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 8 2/3 innings. His counterpart from Bridgeport, sophomore Ray Krieger (Derby, Conn.), worked seven frames, giving up three runs (one earned) on six base hits.
Sophomore first-baseman Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J.) hit a solo home run in the third inning for Felician. Classmate J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla.) was 2 for 2.
