Offense Breaks Out In Pair Of Regional Baseball Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician College broke out for 23 runs on 32 base hits in earning a pair of non-conference baseball victories on Sunday at the Ripken Experience complex. The Golden Falcons set season highs for runs and hits in a 14-4 morning victory over Southern Connecticut State University before returning in the afternoon to defeat Stonehill College, 9-4.

Freshman infielder Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.) was 6 for 9 on the day with three doubles and four runs batted in.

Felician (4-4) was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II East Region preseason writers' poll. Stonehill was the No. 7 team in the same poll, while Southern Connecticut State received votes.

The Golden Falcons slugged three home runs among their 18 hits against Southern Connecticut (2-5). Sophomore Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J.) clubbed a two-run shot in the top of the first inning to get Felician off to a fast start. Freshman Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior Gerard De Filippo (East Hanover, N.J.) hit the first round-trippers of their careers leading off the third and sixth, respectively.

Felician led, 11-1, after four innings. Senior shortstop Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla.) broke the game open with a three-run triple in the second inning before being plated by a Price single.

Sophomore right-hander Rob Naughton (Levittown, N.Y.) (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion. Nearly 19 hours after recording a one-out save, Naughton started and pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Strickland was 4 for 5 with two doubles, and Shaw and Price had three hits apiece.

Felician was the designated home team against Stonehill, and used a five-run bottom of the third to key its second win of the day. Already leading, 1-0, on a second-inning run-scoring double from Nick Vazquez (Palm Coast, Fla.), Felician put its first two hitters second and third bases in the third.

Price came up with a sacrifice fly, and De Filippo followed with an RBI single. Strickland drove in two runners with a double, and freshman Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) capped the rally with another double, bringing home Strickland.

Six different Golden Falcons had two hits apiece in Felician's 14-hit attack, which included six doubles. Freshman pitcher Steven Slagmolen (Toms River, N.J.) was credited with his first career victory after giving up two runs on three hits in four frames. Four Felician relievers combined to allow two hits the rest of the way.

Felician begins a three-game series at Barry University on Saturday in Miami Shores, Fla.
