Baseball Suffers Two One-Run Losses At Barry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Felician College baseball team was the victim of a pair of one-run losses on Sunday afternoon, as Barry University swept a non-conference doubleheader from the visiting Golden Falcons, 5-4 and 2-1, at Feinbloom Field. The games were played with metal bats.

Felician freshman outfielder Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was 3 for 6 with two doubles on the day

Felician (4-6) is ranked No. 6 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.

Barry (8-6) took the lead for good in Game 1 by breaking a 2-2 tie on RBI singles by Jonathan Quintana (Miami Lakes, Fla.) and Ross Thibeault (Weston, Fla.) in the bottom of the third inning. After the Buccaneers tacked on another run in the fourth, Felician pulled to within 5-4 in the fifth. Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J.) walked, J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla.) was hit by a pitch, and both came around to score on a throwing error on Diesel's grounder to third base.

Barry starting pitcher Luis Deville (Miami, Fla.) (2-2) and reliever Joeanthony Rivera (Naples, Fla.) shut down the Golden Falcons the rest of the way. Deville retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings, and finished with four hits allowed and six strikeouts in seven frames. Rivera gave up a hit and a walk in two scoreless innings for his first save of 2015.

Diesel had a two-run double in the third inning for Felician. Senior left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J.) (0-2) started on the mound and took the loss. He surrendered three earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

The nightcap was a scheduled seven-inning affair. Felician out-hit the Buccaneers, 6-5, but came up on the short end after allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior righty John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) (1-2) pitched his second consecutive complete game for the Golden Falcons. In six innings, he yielded one earned run on five hits, struck out seven batters, and walked one.

Felician jumped out on top in the second inning. Diesel stroked a one-out double to left-center field, and came home one out later on a single by fellow freshman Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.). Barry drew even in the fourth on a two-out run-scoring single by sophomore Ryan Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.)

In the bottom of the sixth, Quintana worked Holland for a two-out walk. Quintana stole second base, and scored when Baldwin's grounder was misplayed. Reliever Jesse Montalto (Franklin Square, N.Y.) pitched a perfect seventh for the Buccaneers for his second save, making a winner of freshman Daniel Broeseker (Safety Harbor, Fla.) (5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 5 SO).

Strickland was 2 for 2 and Diesel also had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Baldwin finished 2 for 3 for Barry. Three Buccaneer pitchers combined to not walk or hit a batter.

Felician continues its trip to Florida with a single game at regionally-ranked Lynn University on Monday.
