Offense Held In Check In Two Losses For Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARY, N.C. – The Felician College baseball team saw its offense held mostly in check during a pair of neutral-site, non-conference losses on Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Felician (5-11) fell to Pace University, 2-1 in 10 innings, in its afternoon contest before suffering an 8-1 setback to the University of Findlay on Sunday night.

Sophomore first-baseman Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J.) went 4 for 7 plus two walks on the day for the Golden Falcons.

In Felician's first game of the day, Pace senior catcher Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came up with a two-out infield single in the top of the 10th inning to plate the eventual winning run. Price doubled with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but after advancing to third base on a wild pitch, pinch-runner Rob Fisher (Matawan, N.J.) was left stranded.

Golden Falcon junior right-hander John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) had to settle for a no-decision after pitching seven shutout innings. Holland maintained a no-hitter through five frames before escaping a first-and-third, none-out jam in the seventh. He allowed three hits, struck out eight batters, and walked three. Senior lefty Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J.) (0-3), the fourth Felician hurler of the game, was saddled with the loss after yielding three hits in the 10th.

Felician broke through for the lead with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Price legged out an infield single, then scored on a double by Gerard De Filippo (East Hanover, N.J.). Pace's equalizer was also generated with two outs and no one on base. In the eighth, Isaiah Rivera (Newington, Conn.) walked and came all the way around when Tyler Bivona (East Northport, N.Y.) lined a full-count single.

Price was 3 for 4 and De Filippo had two hits for the Golden Falcons, who left 11 runners on base. Senior right-hander Josh Grant (Corning, N.Y.) (1-0) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief work for the Setters (1-5).

Junior right-hander Mason Mayberry (Bowling Green, Ohio) pitched a gem for Findlay against the Golden Falcons later on Sunday. Mayberry (2-1) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla.) led off with a double. He departed after eight stanzas having allowed one run on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while picking up 12 strikeouts.

The Oilers (3-9) broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Drue Brooks (Spring Hill, Fla.) (0-2) and the Felician bullpen. An infield single by Roman Kuster (Lake Orion, Mich.) plated the first run, and Logan Harrah (Newton Falls, Ohio) capped the rally, which contained only three hits, with a two-run single. Just three of Findlay's runs in the game were earned.

Brooks struck out five and gave up three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Price had an RBI double in the eighth. Chase Goulette (Tipp City, Ohio) was 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice for the Oilers.

Felician plays two more games in Cary on Monday, including the nightcap against nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University.
