Queens Outlasts Felician In Baseball, 10-9

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Queens (N.Y.) College scored twice in the top of the ninth inning and held on for a 10-9 non-conference baseball victory over host Felician College on Thursday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Sophomore left fielder Diego Gonzalez (College Point, N.Y./Cardozo) put Queens ahead for good, breaking an 8-8 tie with a two-out, two-run triple in the ninth. Knight leadoff man Thomas Parish (Cortland Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) was 3 for 4 plus two walks and scored three runs. Sophomore second-baseman Rob Fisher (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) had a triple among three hits for Felician (6-14).

The nine-inning contest lasted three hours, 43 minutes. The Golden Falcons and Knights each used six pitchers, and the teams combined for 22 hits and 17 walks. Queens left 13 runners on base, while the hosts stranded 10 men.

Felician erased an early 3-1 deficit by scoring six times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Gerard De Filippo (East Hanover, N.J./DePaul Catholic) highlighted the rally with a three-run triple. But the Knights came right back with four runs in the top of the sixth to knot the game at 7-7. Each team put up a single run in the eighth.

With one out in the ninth, Parish singled and Kevin Kolesar (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) drew a walk. Following a pitching change, a wild pitch and a strikeout, Gonzalez blasted a fly ball that one-hopped the fence in left field. In the bottom of the ninth, Felician pinch-hitter Sean Rogers (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) made a bid for a game-tying two run home run, but the ball fell just short of the right-field fence and Rogers settled for an RBI triple. Queens sophomore right-hander Joe Broderick (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) then induced a fly-out for his first save of the season.

Senior Dan Walsh (Nesconset, N.Y./Suffolk CC) (1-0) completed the eighth on the mound and earned the victory for the Knights. Gonzalez and Kolesar each finished 2 for 4. Senior shortstop Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla./Plantation) was 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Golden Falcons.

Felician continues a six-game homestand by opening up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a doubleheader against Bloomfield College on Monday at 1 p.m. at Lyndhurst Recreation.
