Baseball Uses Whole Field To Sweep Bloomfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College hit three inside-the-park home runs while sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Bloomfield College at the spacious Lyndhurst Recreation Complex on Monday afternoon. Felician (8-14, 2-0 CACC) came from three runs down to win Game 1, 12-4, before capturing a 12-1 victory in Game 2.

Felician received strong starting pitching in the twinbill. Junior right-hander John Holland (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) struck out 10 batters over seven innings to win the first game, and senior lefty Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) gave up two hits and no earned runs over six frames in the nightcap. Fowler fanned nine batters to surpass 200 strikeouts for his career.

In Game 1, the Felician offense was stymied for six innings by Bloomfield senior right-hander Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J./Southern Regional). The Bears, meanwhile, had posted single runs in the third, fourth, and seventh stanzas for a 3-0 edge.

The Golden Falcons, however, exploded for seven runs off of Junger and the Bloomfield bullpen in the bottom of the seventh. After Felician put its first two runners on base, sophomore Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) jump-started the rally with a two-run triple. Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) followed with a tying RBI single. Three batters later, Rob Fisher (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Branden Shaw (Cooper City, Fla./Plantation) lined back-to-back two-run singles.

The Golden Falcons tacked on five more runs in the eighth, capped by Fisher's three-run, inside-the-park homer to deep right field.

Fisher finished 2 for 3 with five runs batted in, and Strickland also had a pair of hits for Felician. Holland (2-3) allowed three runs on six hits, with four walks. The Bears (1-8, 0-3) left 11 runners on base. Freshman Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J./PCTI) went 2 for 4 with a triple and scored twice for Bloomfield.

After each team posted a single run in the first inning of Game 2, Felician broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third. Shaw put the hosts ahead for good with a deep blast to center field on which he sped all the way around the bases for a two-run homer. With two outs, the Golden Falcons re-set the table with a walk and a single, and junior designated hitter Gerard De Filippo (East Hanover, N.J./DePaul Catholic) came up with his team's third inside-the-park round-tripper of the day, a three-run shot to right-center.

Fowler and the Felician bullpen combined on a four-hitter. Fowler (1-4) yielded only an unearned run on two hits, with two walks. He becomes the third pitcher in the 16-year history of Felician baseball to reach 200 strikeouts, joining Stephen Paladino (246) and Scott VanEs (210).

Leadoff man Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) went 4 for 5 with three runs scored to pace the Golden Falcons' 16-hit attack. Shaw was 3 for 4 with three RBI, and Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a triple among two hits. Reina drove in the Bloomfield run with a first-inning single.

Polgano went 5 for 9 on the day, scoring five runs and driving in two.

Felician concludes a six-game homestand when it entertains Dominican (N.Y.) College in a CACC twinbill on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lyndhurst Recreation.
